At the heart of the display is our copy of the first edition - three volumes in 'publishers boards', as they would have been seen by those who stepped into a bookshop in 1813 to buy the novel. The display tells the story of how Pride and Prejudice has become one of the most popular novels in the English language. Largely self-taught as a boy, Scotland's enlightened higher education system allowed him to secure a medical training at Anderson's College in Glasgow in 1836. In 1841 he left for Africa and spent the next 32 years opening up the "Dark Continent". In this lecture Professor Mike Barrett will outline key scientific and geographical discoveries made by Livingstone and in particular discuss the impact of tropical diseases on his travels in Africa. <http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs155/1102261721925/img/947.jpg> Charlie, Meg and Me 17 September 2013, 18.00 The journey of more than 500 miles undertaken by Bonnie Prince Charlie in the wake of the battle of Culloden has been recreated for the first time by Gregor Ewing. His extraordinary experience is recounted in Charlie, Meg and Me. . .
