    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] The Elusive McDougalls of Mariposa - and Who is Catherine McDougall Beechroft

    3. Dear Ida and Michael, Yes, the family Michael found by another link is mine. I haven't offered it because I don't know if parts of it are correct/not in error. There are three big problems with the McDougalls of Mariposa. 1. There is a nine-year gap in the OPR re kids in Torranachtrach and Killunaig - 1818-1827. Whether the two pioneer couples got non-religious or there was no minister or the minister got lazy posting, who knows. 2. The 1851/2 census for Mariposa is lost. The '51 is so important in Ontario because it gives the pioneer kids. By 1861 most have left home - the girls to married names. 3. The McDougalls used the alias of McLucas and McLucais and others I probably haven't found until circa 1825. I don't know enough about the clan history but I assume it came out of the '45 rebellion. Here is what I have from the OPR: Neil McLucais/McDougall of Killunaig m. Sarah/Marion Campbell of Torrenichruich 25.2.1815 - my 2ggrandparents Mary McLucas c 2.1.1816 Killunaig John McLucas c 13.4.1817 Killunaig Murdock McLucais c 7.7.1827 Killunaig Marion McDougall c 8.1.1830 Killunaig Donald McLucais of Torranauchtrach m Julia Paterson of Torrranuachdrach 27.2.1816 Neil McLucais c 5.2.1817 Duncan McLucais c 3.11.1828 Hector McDougall c 10.8.1830 But I also have the following based on 2-4 cross-references all with question marks (save my ggrandmother and her sister) Christina and Isabella said to be twins b. 10.1835 no day - 1901 census to the first couple John 1821 Janet 1824 - has a daughter Julia Flora 1826 - with mother in 1871 census Ann - b. 1.9.1826 c 16.6 1827 tombstone Wick Cemetery, buried with her father. So, as I say, Catherine could be in either of these two families to Mariposa. The next steps would be to check her marriage in 1842 on microfilm to see if the father is named as often was in the 1840's and to find the death certificate on microfilm under Beechcroft. Other kids still to find? All the best. Elizabeth.

    3. Dear Ida and Michael, Forgot to include in the info below that also not in the OPR is Donald as son of Neil and Sarah, b. 4.5.1824/6, and Allan b. 4.8.1819 as a son. (but they could be Donald's sons, not Neil's). They are definitely my relations but whether siblings of my ggrandmother Christine, or first cousins, I do not know. And another reason for the elusiveness is that of all the historic atlases produced of the Ontario counties in the 1870's and 1880's none was done of - Victoria County. A facsimile was done of 1900-1901 but it hardly rates for research in the 1820's-30's there is so little in it. In answer to your question Michael, I suspect that Donald and Neil, probably born circa 1780's, are brothers, with John McLucais in the 1779 census as their father, but have no proof to date. I think the Catherine Beechroft could be a daughter of Neil or Donald. The only Catherine I have found to date is one in McNeil Cemetery, wife of a G.W. Angus, b 22.5.1827 d 8.5.1905, says the tombstone. All the best. 3. Dear Ida and Michael, Now that I am on a roll, here is the third pioneer McDougall family from Mull to Mariposa. From the OPR: John McLucais m Jane Thoburn 31.1.1815 at Carsaig. Marjory McLucais c 31.12.1815 Catharine McLucais c 10.12.1816 Pennyghael John McDougall c 12.5.1821 Pennyghael I don't have it written, but if my memory servies me right, they were later to Mariposa, in the 1840's. Murdock says in the 1901 census he (and his parents, etc) emigrated in 1834. Re my Neil and Sarah. One bonus is that the 1841 tax assessments have survived for Mariposa. In it are both fathers - Neil and Donald. Neil says besides Sarah and himself there are: 2 males under 16 3 males 16 and over 2 females under 16 1 female 16 and over for a total of eight children - although the older occupants could be parents of Neil or Sarah. This is why I still feel there are kids missing for both families - eg. possibly an Alexander and a Catherine. All the best. Elizabeth. > From: moshi94@hotmail.com > To: sct-isleofmull@rootsweb.com > Date: Tue, 27 Aug 2013 15:37:39 +0000 > Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] The Elusive McDougalls of Mariposa - and Who is Catherine McDougall Beechroft > > Dear Ida and Michael, > Forgot to include in the info below that also not in the OPR is Donald as son of Neil and Sarah, b. 4.5.1824/6, and Allan b. 4.8.1819 as a son.
