Hi Ida, I had a quick look on the index's in SA and there are at least three Peter born with 5 years of one another to three different families. If someone needs to follow up on any of these i'm happy to look up as I have all the SA indexes at home. I just checked for McArthur deaths again - all at or near Mt Gambier Dist GREY Peter died 26-08-1892 age 86 died near mt Gambier S.Aust Ref204/293 Peter died 14 Dec 1902 aged 37 died Millicent SA Ref 291/232 Peter Dugald died 29-4-1911 died Mt Gambier SA Ref 256/424 Many years ago I did know a Mr McArthur in the Robe area of south Australia who was a descendant of early settlers from Mull. If there is someone wanting more info i have access to most of the SA records. I can identify with this problem, Jean. I have two ancestral males who were cousins of one another born 4 yrs apart in the 1820s. The rounding of ages for the 1841 census made things much worse. "What if I married them to the wrong woman" I thought? The only way of being certain *is* to purchase census and the death certificate for them both and hope the information on the certificate is complete and accurate. I will wager that this is not unique and that if a researcher doesn't purchase certificate information there could be many trees that need shaking around. Not unique at all. Death certificates were key to determining which Mary McCormick (first cousins, close in age) married which husband. I think the lesson here is that while we can make educated guesses based on naming patterns and ages and even the census records...it's hard to be certain without a certificate that names the parents be it marrage or death...and even then, errors may have been made on the certificate. Pleased you agree with me Linda. We cant make guesses in these circumstances if we want accurate records. My point, we have to purchase records for certainty.
