How lucky you are to have such a diary Jean! Can you tell us what ports they stopped at on there way to Australia? I would be interested to know. I have also been wondering about our families lives back in the 1830/40's. Does anyone know what celebrations and traditions they would have enjoyed? I was reading on the web that Scottish and Irish people used to have huge bonfires and special rituals to celebrate the beginning of each season. Would they have done that? Did they celebrate birthdays, Christmas and Easter? I would love to know more about their lives and not just have a list of names. Hi Joy, I can recommend 'Scottish Customs from the cradle to the grave' by Margaret Bennett. Gives a good insight into the way folk used to live. Its published by Birlinn ISBN 1 84158 293 X. Its available at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scottish-Customs-Cradle-Margaret-Bennett/dp/184158293X where you can have a sneak read. I'm sure there will be other stockists.
