Hi Moira and all: 1 The early land records can be found at http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/printresults.php. It lists 6 Lamonts in Huron County, Grey Twp. 2 Not all deaths were recorded it seems (witness my search for Alexander McPhail). However you can try http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/. It leads to an index, then the actual certificate (if it exists), both of which are available on microfilm through the LDS Family History Centres. The certificate is not as detailed as the Scottish records and will record name, date of death, age, cause of death, rank or profession (or marital state), names of physician and informant, where registered, religious denomination, name of registrar and county. In Canada, vital statistics are a provincial responsibility, and Ontario did not begin its records until 1869 - and then there were delays. Prior to that there were church records and they were not necessarily complete. It's a challenge. Good luck. I had a look at the OPRs and found Duncan Lamont's birth on 9/2/1837 (Torosay & Kinlochspelvie) & Ann's birth on 19/2/1841 (Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon) but nothing for Daniel. Could you tell me how I can go about getting death certificates from Canada - is there an online service like Scotlandspeople that has BDM & census records? There are Carmichael descendants of this family living in New Zealand who I know will be very interested in this. Two of Mary's siblings came to NZ - her sister Margaret Carmichel who married Charles Stuart (Stewart), and her brother, Alexander's widow, Mary Macdougall came here in 1863 with 7 of their 10 children after Alexander's death (restrictions on how many children you could bring I believe). Thanks again for all the information you've given. The OPR birth you have: >>1837, Born 16 Jan. bapt. 9 Feb. to Donald Lamont and Mary Carmichael, Duart a lawful son Duncan Lamont.>> It was good to see this additional birth info as there are 2 marriage OPRs for this couple, both in February 1836, which confused me. I thought at first they were two couples with the same name but now I realise one entry just says Donald Lamont, Duart, and the other says Donald Lamont from the Parish of Torosay. Both have Mary Carmichael, Bunessan (correct). So I think for some reason their entry was duplicated. However to satisfy myself completely I need to get Mary Carmichael & Donald Lamont's death certificates which I hope shows parents' names. I've also got Lamont in my ancestry so am equally curious to find out which Lamont branch Donald was from. I hope Elaine or the Canadian listers can tell me how to go about this. Your census info has this couple both still alive in 1861 which will help to narrow down the timeframe. Thanks again for the generous help given by you and Elaine. I don?t know if the following will be of any help as there is a Carsiag on the mainland of Argyll near Tayvallich. In the Clan Campbell Sherriff Court Books of Argyll, Vol 1 (Pub 1913): 1723, October 28th ? Discharge by Ronald Campbell, merchant lately of Bardavaran, now in Barmore, in favour of Archibald Campbell of Carsaig, his father in law, for 1,000 merks, contained in the contract of Marriage between the said Ronald Campbell, and Mary Campbell, lawful daughter of the said Archibald, dated 13th and 27thApril 1715, being the tocher payable to him. The Discharge dated at Tarbet 10th February 1718. The first and only Campbell of Carsaig named in G Harvey Johnson's Heraldry of The Campbells (Pub 1921),is Daniel (son of Archibald Campbell of Strondour and Margaret McNeil of Creas, will recorded 4th June 1723) who married Janet daughter of Patrick Campbell of Kilduskland. There is no issue given for Daniel and Janet. Daniel had a younger brother Alexander but a note says he only had daughters, no names. This is erected over the remains of ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL OF STRONDOUR who died on Novr ye 13th 1719 in the 42nd year of his age, by the direction of DANIEL CAMPBELL OF CARSAIG and ALEXANDER CAMPBELL JUNR Mercht in Glasgow, his sons 1748. She is buried in Ram's Horn Churchyard in Glasgow about 1820. He had two sisters Jessie and Elizabeth. Campbell and also had two children. 1. Mary Campbell who married her brother's tutor, Patrick McRuer of Doon. He was a student at University of Glasgow of which Campbell was president. ( I have checked with the University and they have no record of Campbell as president but have a Patricius McRuer as a student in 1778). Mary and Patrick (his name is also quoted as Peter M. McRuer) had 12 children. He was a minister at Jura and Colonsay. Afterwards moved to Greenock where they both died. He was buried there about 1787. She died and is buried in Carsaig, aged 40 years about 1785. 2. Daniel Campbell, only son of Campbell of Carsaig, was a very extravagant man and ran through the property, so Carsaig had to be sold. Daniel never married. The two sisters of Campbell had their share (of Carsaig) and lived on it. The aunts were buried at Ram's Horn Churchyard about 1868." Later these notes also state that Sir Walter Scott was a cousin of Mary Campbell. Any help or information would be appreciated so that I can prove or disprove these notes. I realized that I had put Huron Twp, Grey Co, whereas it should have been Grey Twp Huron Co. Huron Twp is of course in Bruce Co. ANYWAY..the Duncan Lamont whose death record started all of this must be the one born in Torosay Jan 16 1837 according to the IGI as the age given on his death certificate works out to Jan 17 1837..pretty close for times before calculators. I doubt if the death certificates for his parents would show much. They would have died in the 1870's or 80's and the info on the certificates was minimal. The other problem with early deaths is that many people did not bother to report them, although it was supposed to be mandatory. The 1871 Ontario census on the National Archives site is just heads of families but I found Donald Lamont in Grey Twp, Huron Co. It might be interesting to try and have a look at land records. These can be ordered through the LDS, but first try and look at the complete 1871 census. If you can't find it online, it too can be ordered through the LDS. On the 1871 census is an agricultural census which will give the lot and concession for Donald Lamont. If he was still around in 1877 or 1878 there is a site which has transcribed the lot owners from the set of atlases produced for Ontario Counties.....can anyone give me the site...I think it was through the McLennan Library at McGill. There is a site on which most online census are listed: www.censusfinder.com This is not just for Canadian census. I tried to track down marriages for some of the other children and found John Alexander Lamont b Pickering Twp, living in Grey Twp who married Aug 15 1878 in Wingham...can't believe I forgot to copy the bride's name. However, the big find was while looking for Ann who was 12 in 1852 and not expecting to find anything, I got Nancy Stewart Lamont of Grey Twp, daughter of Donald and Mary Lamont who, a spinster at 40, married Feb 27 1884 a widower, James Campbell age 71 at Wingham. So with a Duncan Carmichael and an Ann (Nancy) Stewart in this family, I think we've got the right one!
