    3. Thank you to all the ladies who contacted me and want to know more. I would suggest that you google "Roses of the heart" and that will take you directly to the program and the pattern for the bonnets [easy]. For those who know nought about Australian history, there were tens of thousands of UK women sent to Australia as convicts, many like my 3 x g. gran were sent to Hobart Tasmania and spent years in the notorious women's prison. Many woman and untold children [many women gave favours to the guards or soldiers, or were raped] died in the prison, some like my gran were sent out to work on distant farms, some disappeared [probably killed by cruel property owners], the stories would break your heart, such was their horrendous existence until they gained their freedom. My gran's husband was convicted of stealing a cheese to feed his family [Somerset] and was sentenced to 7 years in Australia, gran thought she would join him and so pick-pocketed, got caught, but instead of being sent to Sydney she was sent to Hobart. He finished his time, went back to find her gone, he then came to find her but died at sea. They never saw each other again and their child perished in the Hobart prison [ filthy conditions, disease rife, malnutrition]. My gran ended up marrying again, the convict who drove the women out to the various properties to work, he died and she married twice more [9 children in all], the last time she married an engineer in NSW. She must have been one hell of a survivor. Christina Henri is the Project co-ordinator [ a university graduate] cjhenri@iinet.net.au The project will continue this year so if you feel like being creative, go ahead and join us. We need 25,000 bonnets by March 2008. I am starting my 4th bonnet today in memory of one of the women who did not survive the prison, if you would like to do that then I will send you a name. Cheers, Irene Kerr
