Hi All James seems to have in use among the Beatons, even back into the 17th century, with the 1662 century Argyll estate rental part of which appears in Jo Currie's book on Mull listing James Beton in Assapol in 1662, and one of the Pennycross family was also James Beaton, listed among the rebels put to the horn around the time of the 1715 rising, if memory serves me correctly, and there are a few listed on the Mull genealogy site.
