Hello Jean, I don't know if it was across the board, but as far as my McGilvray research is concerned it appears that the family naming pattern was adhered to and if there were no James in the family it wasn't carried on. There were about six McGilvray James' born on the Ross recorded in the OPRs. What I have seen is that there are names that never seem to appear for McGilvrays on the Ross in the OPR records these are Andrew, Barbara, Daniel, Finlay, Grace, George, Helen. All of these names were used in other parts of Scotland. Certainly as far as James as a name for McGilvrays it was popular in other areas.
