Dear all I am wondering if anyone can tell me if Hector Lachlan Stewart MacLean (1870 - 1897) had any children? I am trying to find out if he is my great grandfather. For those who might be interested, here is a link to a photograph of my grandmother with her 4 sisters. I believe they may be the daughters of Hector Lachlan Stewart MacLean. I have also posted 2 other photos to that site, one of my father with my grandmother and one of my grandmother alone: http://profile.imageshack.us/user/louahnal/ And also, here is a link to Hector Lachlan Stewart MacLean's photo: http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/punjab_frontier_despatches/chitral_vc_victoria_cross.htm If anyone thinks they may be a descendant of Hector Lachlan Stewart MacLean, I'd be most grateful for any information you might be able to give me. At this stage, I'm just trying to work out if I am a descendant of the MacLeans or not. My grandmother's maiden name was not MacLean but I believe her mother remarried after Hector MacLean was killed in action and so it may be that she took on her step-father's name. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks all, Louahna
Louhna There is no mention of wife or children in his VC citation or memorial: Lieutenant Hector Lachlan Stewart Maclean, VC - Guides Cavalry - killed in action at Landakai - 17th August 1897. Aged 26. Son of Major-General Charles Maclean, CB, CIE (Indian Staff Corps). Born 13th September 1870. Killed while trying to help Lieut. Robert Greaves. Posthumous VC awarded. Buried (sic) at Mardan* "Sacred to the memory of Lieutenant Hector L.S. MacLean. Adjutant 'Queen's Own' Corps of Guides Cavalry who fell mortally wounded, in action near Landakai, Swat, on the 17th August 1897 while gallantly endeavouring to rescue a Brother Officer. This monument is erected as a token of sincere regard and admiration by his Brother Officers of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers and the 'Queen's Own' Corps of Guides. MacLean's Cross." * The memorial at Marden is just that a memorial - he was buried in India. It's at St Albans Church, Marden, Kent His Gallanach line is also given in the book The Clan Gillean (Haszard and Moore, Charlottetown, 1899) - p421-3 but again no descendants are given, but they are not given for any of his siblings either - 3 sisters and 3 brothers. The death of his brother Donald Hugh is given in The Times, Thursday, Aug 09, 1951; pg. 1; Issue 52075; col A but I have not seen it to confirm - may mention him and/or his family. jay Dave and Louahna wrote: > Dear all > > I am wondering if anyone can tell me if Hector > Lachlan Stewart MacLean (1870 - 1897) had any children?
