    3. Hello list I have for several years been searching for my g-grandmother Catherine McDonald who [I was always told] was born on Isle of Skye. Apparently we were misinformed!! I just received a "notebook" - an old Hilroy school scribbler -- that was my aunt's [who was born 1896] and in this there is an indication that our Mcdonald family is from Mull. That is the indeed the case -- Parish of Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon in the Ross of Mull. The family is at Ardfinaig in the 1841 census. Took only a minute to find thanks to www.Mullgenealogy.co.uk !! Hector McD was married to Dorothy McGilvra [an uncommon first name] K&K District No2; Page No 8; House no 39; Ardfinaig 1841 McDonald Hector, 55, ag labourer, Y in parish McDonald Dorothy, 40, Y in parish McDonald Donald, 17, Y in parish McDonald John, 12, Y in parish McDonald Catherine, 8, Y in parish McDonald Duncan 7, Y in parish McDonald Marrion 4, Y in parish next h/h McDonald Ann 18, Y in parish -only one missing is Archibald who was born around 1840 and may have just missed the census This Catherine McDonald is my g-grandmother who came to Canada, married John McGillivray [who was at Carsaig, Mull in 1841 Census] and lived at Saugeen Twp, Bruce Co, ON Canada. John died 1882 and Catherine and family moved to Western Canada later in 1880s. I now also found that brother John McD is the only one who actually listed "Mull" as birth place on his marriage registration in Canada. Others just have recorded as Scotland as birthplace. Dorothy does not seem to be a common McGillivray name on Mull. The IGI version of Catherine's OPR christening has "DIRFAIL MCGILVRA" as mother's name. Her children's marriage records have DORCAS or DOROTHY. 1851 Census in Vaughan Twp, York Co, ON has her as DOROTH. Most of her children subsequently had a Dorothy/Dora child in the family naming pattern. Have not yet found a connection into other McG families for Dorothy. I am now gathering info on this family branch. Have not found marriage record of Hector and Dorothy on Mull yet. Their birth records may be hard to come by as pre-1804 K&K. I think that Hector and Dorothy McDonald are buried in Kincardine Cemetery, Bruce Co, ON. It would also appear that we drove right past the farm estate at Ardfinaig, just west of Bunnesan, more than once last May during MUGG. Who knew?? at the time, certainly not me!! Finding family really gives a boost to the hunt! Peggy Quinney
