    3. Hello List, Margaret "Maggie" McKellar was the younger sister of Annie McKellar who married Charles McIntosh. On letters that I have from her, she spells her surname MacKellar. Maggie was born 23 October 1861 in Tiregoill, Isle of Mull, Scotland. She was about 2 when she emigrated from Scotland to Canada, first to the area near St. Catharines, Ontario then about 1 year later to Bruce Co., near Port Elgin. Maggie had an amazing life. She was a woman far ahead of her time. After grade school, she refused to go on in her schooling, worked as a cook on her uncle Donald McLeod's ship, travelling the Great Lakes, before she took up the millinery trade. Her religious faith took her back to school when she decided that giving money for the world's evangelization didn't work, that it would be better if she gave of herself. At age 22, she started the equivalent of high school but found she couldn't handle the subjects so went back to grade school to repeat the final grade. After high school, she attended Kingston Women's Medical College [the medical course for women, associated with Queen's University] finishing her course there in 1890, graduating with her M.D. She was sent to Neemuch, in Central India by the Canadian Presbyterian Mission where she worked for about 40 years as a medical missionary. She was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind medal for public service to India in 1911 by King George V at his Coronation Durbar as Emperor of India. Queen's University conferred on her their highest degree, L. L. D., Honoris Causa in 1929. Maggie died on 24 August 1941 in Toronto, Ontario. She is buried in Sanctuary Park Cemetery in Port Elgin, Bruce Co., Ontario, beside her parents and brother Duncan. I have a bit more information on her parents and siblings if anyone is interested. Ann Ward da.ward@sympatico.ca
