Hi June, Jean and Jan: >From information in June's email I gather that John Beaton, the shepherd from Ardachy who married Ann McDonald on 10 June 1886 at Creich Schoolhouse, remarried shortly after Ann's death at Pottee on 22 November 1898. The 1901 census has the following entry: Potee: John BEATON/head/Shepherd/37 Justine BEATON/wife/27 Mary BEATON/dau John BEATON/son/ Neil BEATON/7/son Flora BEATON/4/dau Annie BEATON/dau/6m. If Ann died in November 1898 at Pottee, it looks as though John remarried 1899 to Justina and the 6 month old daughter Annie was Justina's. Working back from this it looks as though this is John BEATON and first wife Ann McDONALD in the 1891 census: Ploughman's House, Knocknafenaig John BEATON/28/head/Ploughman/born Greenock Ann BEATON/24/wife/Iona Mary BEATON/1/daughter/Kilfinichen. [their older daughter, Annie was with her McDonald grandparents at Kentra] So this means that Annie BEATON who went America had four siblings as well as at least one half sister. As a shepherd and sometime ploughman, it would be feasible that John Beaton would move around the Ross of Mull. Jill
