Noticed this name in Stewart Young letter. I live in Port Elgin and have heard this story about Lochbuie McLain. It seems that he was on a Fishing Boat sailing from Goderich (or at least south of Port Elgin) to a group of Islands known as the Fishing Islands north of Sauble Beach when a sudden Lake storm arose. The Boat was anchored in the Bay at Port Elgin. Mclain seems to have forgot about fishing and is said to have built a tavern or inn on the corner of what is now Goderich and Market sts. This seems a little unlikely as this is about a mile from the Beach and the trail which ran along the Lakeshore from somewhere south to Southampton. LochBuie Mclain seems to have shortly after disappeared and no other story is recounted. There are McLains in the area but they do not to my knowledge lay any claim. I am going to be busy for a week or so but after I will do some inquires and see again if I cant find some more about him.
