    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] ancestors of Janet Campbell (Boag) c1833-1905
    2. Keith A. Bender, Ph.D
    3. Hi, I have recently been introduced to the www.mullgenealogy.co.uk website and have been trying to follow up on some of my family history while I am on sabbatical in Scotland. Any help that you all can give me would be most appreciated. My main quest really involves two parts. The first is the name of my great, great grandmother listed in the subject line. According to the website, Janet Campbell was born in Salen around 1833. She married Robert Boag from Dunbarton and moved to Dunbarton after their marriage. There they had seven children: Edward (c1861 - ?), Duncan (c1862 - ?), Janet/Jenny (1864-1904), Mary (c1866-?), Robert (c1869-1905), Agnes (c1872 - ?) (my great grandmother), and Alexander (c1874 - ?). What I am really interested in is Janet Campbell's ancestors on Mull. I have looked at some of the Census records on the website, but none of the searches on Janet Campbell, say, for the 1841 Census seem a good match on her age. Any information would be most helpful. The other piece of a puzzle is the following. In my grandmother's family records she has a newspaper obituary for a Hugh Campbell, aged 88, from Achronich and buried in Knock Cemetary. He was a bachelor, son of Alexander Campbell, and went by the sobriquet of 'King of Mull' (he must have been a character!). Unforatunately, I don't have a date on the obiturary, but I am fairly certain that he appears several times in the Census records. He has a brother named Alexander and a sister named Ann. If I made the link correctly (from Jo Currie's helpful notes on 'CR Deaths in Kilninian'), he is the son of Alexander Campbell (c. 1768-1857) and Effy McKinnon (c. 1775 - 1857). Unfortunately, I cannot really pin down Hugh's birth year. According to the ages in the Census records, it could be anything between 1816 and 1832! The mystery is why my grandmother would have this obituary. He was likely a relative, but I cannot seem to get a link. So if anyone has any information on this group, I would be most appreciative as well. Thanks, Keith -- Keith A. 3. Hi Keith I don't think I can help you with both queries. As I haven't worked through the Campbell's yet. I'm wondering if possibly this Hugh should be listed as the s/o Alexander & Effy and not the s/o Donald ?????? 20 May 1810, Hugh, son of Donald Campbell and Effy McKinnon, Achranich. KLN OPR my census shows it as Ulva Alexander Campbell and Effy McKinnon in Acharanich KLN has the following children listed John Campbell. 9 Dec. 1804 Duncan Campbell. 30 July 1806 Alexander Campbell. 8 Sep. 1812 Janet Campbell. 9 Sep. 1814 Anne Campbell. 22 Dec. 1816 In 1841 at Achronich Ulva Hugh appears with Alexander Campbell 65 farmer and Effy McKinnon 55. Hugh is 25 and Ann Campbell 20. Also in this h/h is an Alexander aged 12 as well as a John McPhail aged 5 The family seems to remain on Ulva as Hugh is still there in 1891 but not in 1901 Achronich Campbell Hugh 68 Head Retired Farmer Argyll Ulva Q S 8 UnMar Achronich Campbell Alexander 65 Brother Retired Farmer Argyll Ulva Q S 8 UnMar Achronich Campbell Ann 40 Sister Housekeeper Argyll Ulva Q S 8 UnMar Knowing that neither Hugh nor Alex married. Then either John or Duncan would be the father of the Janet b abt 1833 in Salen. Anything additional you care to add. Where there other children that you know of? Ida Keith A.
