Vol. II, No. VII, October 1817, p. 607 - Marriages - 19 January 1817 - At Glasgow, Mr. John Black, manufacturer, to Catherine, eldest daughter of Mr. Malcolm Maclean, calenderer. Then I came across a marriage in Vol. XI, January - June 1822, p. 499 which read - Lately - At Edinburgh, Allan George Field, Esq. to "Jessie", relict of the late John Maclean, Esq., of Carriacou. This got me a little curious, so I did some checking for Macleans in Carriacou and came across the following (which doesn't match with the date of the above volume, but I believe is the same family). Would love to know if anyone on the list can connect to this family. John MacLean was a notable plantation owner in Grenada and Carriacou and posessed five estates among the islands. He married, in 1812, Janet Urquhart, and upon his death in 1825, his family became the wards of his brother, George MacLean. It was noted, in 1833, that the family owned 3,200 of Carriacou's 4,000 slaves. John and Janet had at least two daughters, Joanna and Dorothea. In a dissertation concerning the Chiefship Issue in the Clan MacRae, by Peter MacRae, London (1999), I found the following concerning Joanna - "The Petition of Sir Colin George Macrae, Knight Bachelor, Writer to the Signet, residing at 45 Moray Place, Edinburgh, Humbly Sheweth: that the Petitioner is the second but eldest surviving son of the late John Anthony Macrae of Wellbank in the County of Forfar, Doctor of Laws, Writer to the Signet, and his wife Joanna Isabella, youngest daughter of John Maclean, Dunfries (?) Estate, Carriacou, Grenada, West Indies." Have a little more information on this family, but have not been able to link back to Mull. Regards, Linda Bennion
