Ellen Sturgeon says ' Still looking for info of my g-grandfather's parents, Catherine McKinnon, & Daniel Alexander McNair. ...... There is no record of a marriage between Catherine & Daniel Alexander. ' The fact that there is no record of a marriage does not necessarily mean that they were not legally married. Many legal marriages in Scotland took place in the house of a relative (up until around 1929 I think) so are not recorded in the OPRs. However I imagine they would be recorded on the Civil Indexes. You also need to consider, as well as illegitimacy, death of a spouse, male or female which was common at quite young ages. Also poverty led to many children brougt up by grandparents or other relatives to ease the burden .. remember these were the times of the 'Clearances' and social disruption. Anne Maye.
