The recent mention of McPHAIL prompts me to see if I can make a link to my McLACHLANs from Morvern. My Dugald McLACHLAN/Peggy CAMPBELL (m 1822) are my problem. I do not know who Dugald's father was but he called his son John (b1833) which may be a clue if there was not a previous son who did not survive. (Peggy's father seems to have been John too). I have a copy of a transcript of a letter from a John/Janet McLACHLAN written 10 Feb 1846 from Lochaline to relatives (unidentified) in Australia. It is to a son & daughter, but it is unclear whether there are two families or dau means d-i-l. It does mention ' Your brother Charles (age 40 at Keil 1841C?) or (age 50 Salachan 1841C?) is well, but for his situation I will not inform. His Daughter Sally is married in Mull upon a shepherd, one John McPHAIL at Kilfinicken and has gotten three fine children.' Does this fit any of your McPHAILs? I do not want to become enmeshed in McPHAILs except to see if I can sort out some connections of John/Janet McLACHLAN who were in Keil until May in 1840 before moving to Lochaline. There are some more clues in the letter if anyone is interested. Anne Maye.
