    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Duncan Maclean, of Uisken
    2. Recently came across the lunacy hearing for LTC Alexander MacLean who died at Millport, in 1859 – and left 20,000 pounds for the education of Maclean males. (Jean Whimp – I will be sending you a copy in a few days) Part of the case involves testimony given by his sister, Mary (Marion) Maclean, wife of Alexander Macdonald, and of Janet (Jessie) Maclean, wife of James Morrison. It is my understanding that this LTC Alexander Maclean was a son of Duncan Maclean of Uisken and Mary, daughter of John Maclean of Gruline. My question is – which John Maclean of Gruline? One thing that is confusing me comes from Clan Gillean, p. 273 on the Macleans of Uisken, which reads: “We find in 1656 Duncan Maclean, son of Patrick, son of John, described as servant to Murdoch Maclean of Lochbuie. This Duncan was in all probability the father of Angus Maclean of Assapol. Angus married Elizabeth, daughter of Duncan Campbell of Dunstaffnage, and had four children by her, Duncan, Marion, Catherine, and Mary. Duncan lived at Uisken in Mull. He married Mary, daughter of John Maclean of Grulin, by whom he had four sons, Alexander, John, Archibald, and Duncan. Duncan (husband of Mary) died in 1770. Alexander, the eldest of his sons, was lieutenant-colonel of the 3d West India regiment. According to his own account, he was of the race of the three Duncans and belonged to the family of Lochbuie. He left the sum of 20,000 pounds for the support and education of boys of the name Maclean.” If Duncan Maclean, of Uisken who married Mary Maclean of Grulin died in 1770, how could he be the father of the LTC Alexander Maclean who left the 20,000 pounds as he was not born until 1777? Also, I thought the LTC Alexander MacLean, who left the 20,000 pounds, was in the 86th Regiment? Would really appreciate some feedback on who the parents were of the Mary, daughter of John Maclean of Gruline, that married Duncan Maclean, of Uisken. And to really make it clear, who were the parents of LTC Alexander Maclean (1777-1859) who left the money for the education of Maclean males? Regards, Linda Bennion
