It has always been hard to know which Maclean of Gruline is being talked about but a couple of comments. The will quoted by Linda says Mary's father was John Lorne, son of Allan, son of Charles. I believe this John Maclean, died May 1792, tacksman to Lochbuie, was the son of Allan Maclean of Suie and Marion Campbell. He became known as "Gruline' after shifting there on becoming tacksman. Though said to be a bachelor he had at least a son, Archibald, by a local woman probably Mary Maclean. His nephew John Maclean of Gruline, son of Hector Maclean of Torren and Julian Maclaine was also a bachelor. The timeline fits better for the first John, died 1792. Duncan Maclean servant to Lochbuie in 1656, born cir 1640 or earlier, son Angus, son Duncan died 1770 ?, son Alexander born 1777? This is a span of about 140 years - appears to be a generation missing from this line? (it is signed Alexander MacLean, Late Lt. Col. 3d W. I . Regt), and hoping that someone can help me understand the last paragraph. It reads: "In accordance to the wishes of my mother the remains of her father John Lorne Maclean to be exhumed from Knock in Mull and interred in Rolic Oran Island of Iona in the grave of his father Alean MacCharlich, Alan Maclean and his ancestor (Ian Larnach Mor) the great John Lorne Maclean is desire being undiscovered till after his funeral which last must be done before this is brought into being". Interment - could this be Reilig Odhrain Burial Ground which is south of the Abbey on Iona? Or possibly Saint Orans Chapel Cemetery on Iona? Does anyone know if there is a transcription for either or both of these cemeteries? His mother - she being Mary Maclean of Grulin/Gruline - her father's name would be John Lorne Maclean, who was a son of Alan Maclean? - and I really can't figure out "Ian Larnach Mor". Any help greatly appreciated! Thanks, Linda
