Christina McLachlan (1900- 1978), I am told, was the teacher for many years at the Craignure Elementary School. I have been trying to find a photo of this school and possibly a reference to her. I am wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to where I might look. Thank you. Nancy
Hi Nancy. You are correct in one way but wrong in another. Firstly it is not Craignure Elementary School, but Lochdon (Lochdonhead) Primary School. I attended this school from 1954 until 1967, when I left and went to Oban High School. Christina, or known to my sisters and I as aunty Chrissy stayed here with her brother Peter until she retired in 1969 or 1970. I am not sure when exactly. She was the solo teacher there for quite a number of years and if she had to go away to a teachers meeting she would leave here brother Peter in charge. There was only one classroom in the school at this time when I was there as the second one had been made into a dining room a number of years before I attended. All years from primary one until primary seven were taught by her on her own in the one classroom. There were only twelve pupils in the school when I was there but there were more than this before I went to it. Also after I left there were 30 odd in it with an extension having been built on to it containing another classroom and changing room in about 1970. I think the roll is back down to the early teens again as the school authority are teaching Gaelic in Salen primary school in a total immersion project and this means taking pupils from the area. I hope this is of some help to you, if you need more I will try and see if I can get you more than this.
