Need some help understanding an entry from Ontarian Families – Genealogies of United Empire Loyalist and Other Pioneer Families of Upper Canada, by Edward Marion Chadwick, Toronto (1898). It has been my understanding from the three major MacLean genealogies, that Allan, 1st of Gruline was a son of Charles Maclean, of Ardnacross and Mary (d/o Allan Maclean of Ardgour)), but the following is given in the source above: “Ian (or John) Dubh, of Morvern, was ancestor of the families of Kinlochaline, Drimmin, Pennycross, and others; he m. 2ndly, Catherine, dau. of John Gorm Campbell, of Lochnell, and had issue of that marriage, one son – Allan, of Ardtornish. Allan, of Ardtornish, who m. the dau. of Maclan of Ardnamurchan (Macdonald of Glencoe), and had issue, of whom the second son, Charles, of Ardnacross. Charles, of Ardnacross, m. Mary, dau. of Allan Maclean of Ardgour, and had issue, of whom the second son, Lauchlan, of Calgary. Lauchlan, of Calgary, m. 1stly Florence, dau. of Farquhar Fraser, Dean of the Isles, and 2ndly, Annie, dau. of John McLean of Toteronald, of the family of Maclean of Coll, and had issue (besides others), Allan, of Gruline. Allan, of Gruline, who m. Una, dau. of Macquarrie of Ulva, and had issue, of whom the second son, Charles, of Kilunaig.” This source continues on, but my main concern is – who were the parents of Allan, of Gruline (husband of Una Macquarrie)? Would appreciate any comments concerning the descend of Allan, of Gruline. Jean Whimp – I know this is part of your line, so would love to get your comments. Thanks, Linda Bennion
Hi Linda, Have printed it off so i can compare it with what I have. Will also look and see whether Nicolas Maclean, who sent his descendancy to the Lord Lyon might have made some comment on this. I know her made some corrections to the original history that had been given to the Lord Lyon. Nicolas is the head of Px branch. I have oblt the three genealogies you mentioned so i'll see if re-reading them adds to my info. Talk to you later when I've had a good look . jean -----Original Message----- From: sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of twbennion@nc.rr.com Sent: Wednesday, 19 February 2014 3:12 AM To: SCT-ISLEOFMULL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Allan MacLean, of Gruline Need some help understanding an entry from Ontarian Families – Genealogies of United Empire Loyalist and Other Pioneer Families of Upper Canada, by Edward Marion Chadwick, Toronto (1898).
