I have checked all the marriages 1842 to 1915 and there is no marriage listed in South Australia for a female surname Paul or Paull to James McDougall. Suggest he may well have gone on to Melbourne (Victoria) or Sydney (NSW). Sometimes they got off the ship in Adelaide but travelled on to Victoria quite soon afterwards because of the gold. However there are 9 marriages for a James McDougall in South Australia (1842-1916) so perhaps he married someone else first....or he married before 1842. My GT Uncle got off the ship in SAust, but immediately travelled overland to Victoria ...another relative even walked to Bendigo, made his money with gold and came back to settle and build a church at cockatoo Valley SA and grow a family in South Australia. He later married a Jean or Jane Paul. There are several possible matches for James on the MullGenealogy database. Just hoping that someone in Australia might be able to pin him down. In addition, some have also left Australia and made their way to either of the New Zealand islands. You will find our New Zealand Listers very helpful if that is your course of enquiry.
