Went to York Co Ont <1839 m Archibald Lamont qv DC 7 Jan 1982 (his personal Correspondence) ((my qestion was she from Iona or Mull)) Lamont Archibald 1810-1900 From Is Mull ARL s/o Duncan Lamont qv and Mary McArthur qv went to Markham twp York Co Ont 1821 moved to Caledon twp and later to Saugeen twp Bruce Co Farmer. m Margaret McKechnie qv and had with other ch: 1 Sarah 2 William 3 Robert 4 Donald 5 Alexander 6 John, sometime in Santa Fe` NM DC 7 Jan 1982 I found a marriage for Archibald & Margaret's Son Donald 003327-80 (Grey Co) Donald LAMONT, 29, farmer, Canada, Bruce Twp, s/o Archibald LAMONT & Margaret MCKECHNIE, married Margaret McCOLLUM, 20, Canada, Bentinck Twp, d/o John MCCOLLUM & Ann MORRISON, witn: Archibald CAMPBELL & Donald MCGILVREY, both of Bentinck Twp, 28 Apr 1880 Is this the same couple ? I've looked for both Mary & Margaret but have only found this reference in Donald's information. If Mary is the error I'd like to note it in my book. thanks Ida

Hi Ida, Looking through the census records there is no Mary with a birth date c 1819 but there is a Margaret born Knocknafenaig which would make her Mull but Iona Parish. Perhaps this is some part of the confusion. I believe their dau Margaret married Hugh McDonald of Kilninian parish. She died 1902 Ulva and her parents are given as John McKechnie/MARGARET McPhee. This looks like one of many similar Registrar errors, repeating the deceased's (Margaret's) own name. Are the parents of Margaret McKechnie (m. Archibald Lamont) known ? (presumably not). Margaret / Mary are not so much interchangeable, but rather one is a transcription error of the other (Marg/Mary). Ida The IGI has Margaret as wife of Archibald Lamont. The marriages of their children are online. The following one is dau Mary's to Donald Lamont. Mary is not in your list as a child of Archibald/Margaret. Various spellings of McKechnie were used for the children's marriages, but mother's name is always Margaret. The one Ian mentioned is probably correct. Her father goes on to marry Ann McDonald, and another Margaret is born 1859 Kilninian. Margaret's age on her 1880 marriage to Archibald is 20, so this one fits. I'm puzzled that her mother is given as Ann Morrison Do you have more on her ? Could Margaret's parents be others, identically-named to the Kilninian family ?
