    3. Ida - the only place I've seen Margaret with the surname of Rose is on that one marriage certificate (her son John and Christina Vass). Everything else I've encountered shows her as Black including her son, John's death certificate in 1908. Her own death certificate in 1882 shows her as the daughter of John Black and Catherine (McMillan) Black. I tend to think the Rose is an error. _________________________________________________________________________ For my own records I have recorded Margaret Black as Margaret (Rose) Black

Ida, Linda, (or anyone else) While we were on the subject of sorting out stray children - John's wife Christina had an illigitimate daughter, Jessie, on 19th May 1869, two years before she married John. She is shown with her mother on the 1871 census at the home of Christina's parents William and Jane Vass and then she disappears. Does anyone have any information on her?
