hi My Hector Campbell from Ardtin was a reformed baptist. There probably quite a few of them. It would be interesting to to know why they all turned. Morning All I have been following this thread with interest. My paternal great grandmother was called Catherine Maclean, and her brother Hector was a Baptist, and might even have been a lay preacher, but I may be mistaken in that. The source for this is family oral history. Donald Meek is definitely the authority on this aspect of Mull and Tiree, and indeed his father was the Baptist minister on Tiree. I am not sure if the reason people turned to the Baptist church was similar to the reasons behind the 1843 Church of Scotland disruption, in that they were not in approval of the system of patronage practised by the established church. I also seem to remember reading that there were huge evangelical rallies in Scotland in the Victorian period and that conversion might have been as a result of these. It's a project for another day!
