Hi Malcolm, The first official census was in 1841. The Duke of Argyll held a census of his own lands in 1779 but this was not to the same standard as the 1841 census in that the names of most females where not recorded. Most entries were along the style 'Wife and two daughters'. Male ages were recorded but again very few female. There were counts conducted on other dates but these are of little use. Ian
