Recently found an obituary for Allan McFarlane of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. His birth place is given as Isle of Mull. His age at time of death on 31 July 1879 is given as 69 - so he was born ca. 1810. I do not find an appropriate Allan in the listings in the index.

That sounds like my great-grandfather's, John MacFarlane, brother that we have been trying to find for ages. He is listed in the 1871 census for Pictou County, NS as living on Pictou Island next to his brothers. He was not in the 1881 census. His wife was Sophia/Sophie Rogers; children were John Daniel (aka Duncan), Annie, Jessie, Catherine, Sarah, Elias( aka Ali), Hannah, Mary Ellen(married George W. Payne), David, Flora, George, Robertina.John and Allan also had brother Donald and sister Flora. We believe that Helen/Ellen MacFarlane that married Donald McDonald of Pictou Island was also a sister. Allan D. This may be the following Allan McFarlane, throu the age is off by 10 years: Allan McFarlane was born c. 1819/20 at Scotland (age 51 at time of 1871 census). He married Sophia/Sophie Rogers at New Glasgow in 1844; she was born c. 1820-21 in Nova Scotia (age 49 at time of 1871 census; aged 60 at 1881 census). He appeared on the census of 1871 at Pictou Island, Nova Scotia, age 51, native of Scotland, farmer, married, head of household with wife Sophia and children Annie, Jessie, Catherine, Sarah, Elias, Hannah, Mary Ellen, David, Flora, George and Robertina. He died between 1871 and 1881: he was alive in 1871 at Pictou Island; his Sophie wife was a widow in 1881 at Pictou, Nova Scotia, aged 60, English origin, born in Nova Scotia, and head of household which included Ali__, Kate, David, Flora, George, Robertina, her daughter Mary E. and her husband George Payne, and 2 other people.
