Do the Scottish census of 1861 and 1871 include Isle of Mull? I'm searching for John Carruthers born abt April 1848 supposed to be in Isle of Mull. It appears his father was Robert and his mother Annie Malcom. I've been unable to locate any of these three persons in either census so far. As I'm just new to Scotish research, I wondered if Mull was actually included in these census or if they might have had their own. Robert emigrated to Canada in 1878 so should be in the earlier census. Thanks for any suggestions. Lyn
Hello. The Isle of Mull is indeed included on the Scottish Censuses. Carruthers and Malcolm don't strike me as Mull surnames however. Carruthers in particular seems more likely to have been from SW Scotland -perhaps Dumfries? Good luck with your research. Dear Lyn, I would imagine that she would be meaning the Mull of Galloway. We often get confused with the Mull of Kintyre so I don't see why it can't be the same with it. Hello Lyn, Like Linda, I feel these names aren't Isle of Mull name. They aren't from the Mull of Kintyre are they? I know these place names become confusing several generations down the track. Do you have his birth records as you know the parents names. The Scotlandspeople site may be your best bet if you haven't tried there already. All the Mull census records from 1841 can be found on the Mull Genealogy site http://www.mullgenealogy.co.uk/. There is a William Malcolm living in the Torosay area in the 1881 and 1891 census, he was an incomer from Glasgow. There is also a Robert Carruthers family living in Tobermory from 1881 to 1901, Interestingly enough, both these families although not appearing to be related, have the unusual christian name of 'Mailtland'. So if you have a Maitland in the family you might be in luck. Janice and Linda, Thank you both for the quick responses and suggestions! John Carruthers death record in 1929 from Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada lists his father and mothers names. It also lists pob as Isle of Mull. The informant was a daughter. But with both you suggesting that the family may not actually be from Mull I took another look at what I have so far and saw a daughter is listed on Canada 1891 census as born in Mid Kelton, Cothouse. Which according to google is in Dumfires & Galloway. Took another look at 1871 Scotland census (with a broader mind!) and found a record for John and Elizabeth Carruthers in Kelton, Kirkcudbrightshire which is a very good possible match. (I know he married Elizabeth McNaught and the 2 kids listed match what I have from other sources also). This 1871 record says John was born Kelton also. If this is the right family, I'll have to figure out why his daughter gave Mull as pob on the death record. For now, it looks like I may be on the wrong mail list. But even by likely ruling out some things its been a big help! It would be cool to have Mull ancestors though - so I'll be double checking. Thanks again. > Date: Sun, 23 Oct 2011 12:46:34 +1100 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Scotland census include Mull? > > Hello Lyn, > > Like Linda, I feel these names aren't Isle of Mull name.
