When I first joined this list many years ago, we would have periodic roll-calls where we were invited to share our research interests with the list. I don't remember seeing one in a long time though so .... here goes. If everyone who reads the list could post who they are, what their interest in Mull is and what surnames they are researching - that would be super. I'll start :) I'm Linda, born in England but living in the States. I've been researching genealogy/family history for a bit over 25 years - I started with my family (USA, Scotland, England, Ireland) and later added my husband's family (USA, Canada, Denmark, France and more to be determined). My father's line is from Isle of Mull and I've been on this list for more than a decade. My direct line Isle of Mull surnames are MacCormick, MacDonald, Black, MacLachlan, Stewart, Fletcher, MacArthur, McKechnie, McMillan, McLean but I also research collaterally. Hi Linda, My name is Alex fletcher. I live in the Ross of Mull, about a mile east of Bunessan up the Lee road.My family orginal came from Glen Cannel, just behind Knock on Mull. We have traced them to 1750ish. My great great grandfather who was called John built a house out of stone in a small vilage on the east coast of Mull called Lochdonhead about 1800. He had one son that I know of called Donald. Him and his wife brought up eleven of a family I think it was, one of which was my Grandfather Alexander Fletcher. He and his wife had three of a family, my father Donald being the eldest. My father and his wife had four with me being the youngest. It is mainly the Fletchers and MacPhails that I am tracking. ________________________________ From: Linda M. My name is Bob Murray and I live in St. Andrews on the east coast of Scotland. I am a second cousin to Alex Fletcher, Bunnesan, who gave his interests just recently. He gave details of his great great grandfather John who is also my great great grandfather. Alex's grandfather was Alexander Fletcher, son of Donald. He was the second youngest of that large family and was born on 21 November 1856 at Lochdonhead. My grandfather Donald Fletcher was the next and last of that family born 13 June 1859 also at Lochdonhead. He married a Perthshire farmer's daughter and had only one child, my mother. We believe that our family came from Glen Cannel, possibly from Glen Orchy in Perthshire before that, but we have not been able to trace John's birth or his parents. We guess that he was born between 1775 and 1781 and know that he married Catherine McFarlane in Glasgow on 22 November 1803 (I have a copy of the marriage certificate) and had about 12 children. His eldest son Donald Fletcher (1804-1884) married Sarah Marion MacPhail (1812-1872) in Mull and had about 12 children, many of whom settled around Salen. We know that Sarah Marion's parents were Archibald MacPhail (1781-1837) and Anne MacPherson (1788-1875). Sadly we have been unable to trace Archibald's parents although his grave is in Pennygown Cemetery. The Fletchers and the MacPhails farmed in neighbouring glens and there was a great deal of inter-marriage among them. My cousin Alex's eldest sister still farms with her husband the same croft at Lochdonhead which has been in the family all these many years. Alex had his DNA recorded recently and we are hoping that in time some further relationships will emerge.
Interesting. I have an idea that my Mull family, although they resided there for a greater part of their lives, may also have had connections in the other nearby islands. A birth certificate of one or more of the children suggested Torosay. I wondered if there might be a significance in the time frame, movement of groups of families together. I think I mentioned this before, but its worth doing so again. The one person I have been unable to trace, where I don't know of any reason why, is Donald LIVINGSTON or LIVINGSTONE who married into my INNES/ CAMPBELL family. My name is Kevin Jepson and I am from Brampton, ON Canada. Three generations ago, a young lass named Katharine Dick King Campbell (born 1891) immigrated from Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland in 1909. She was the daughter of Donald Campbell (born 1851 in Tobermory, Mull, Scotland) and Catharine Fletcher (born in 1859 in Esknish, Islay, Scotland). Donald's parents were Christina (Kirsty) McKinnon and Lachlan Campbell both of Tobermory, Mull. Donald had a sister Mary (b 1839) and brothers John and Dugald. Lachlan's parents I believe were Dugald Campbell and Susan ? while Kirsty's parents were John McKinnon and Mary McDiarmid. I'd appreciate any info on these families that anyone could help with? Regards!

Hello Malcolm, I'm interested in the ancestry of your Catherine McLachlan (1841-1928). I have MacLachlans in my line and although I don't recognise her, it's possible she's collaterally related, Mull being a smallish island, afterall. Hello my name is Isabella Manson, I was born in Glasgow in 1956 and came to New Zealand as an 18month old baby with my parents. My interest in Mull is through my father's line, as his Grandmother was a Mary McCallum. We don't know much about her, but I do know that her Mother married twice. Mary ended up in Glasgow as a maid, and I expect this is where she met my Grandfather Peter Smith. I had a trip to Scotland earlier this year, but never managed to get up further than Glasgow. I will be back but have not done much more at this stage about researching more into Mary McCallum, but would like to research the McCallum line, so in the future I will know where to visit. I feel a closeness to Mary, so this intrigues me. Thank you, I do find the posts very interesting. Hello list, I've been lurking for quite some time and enjoy the posts and discussions on the list. My name is Iain Colquhoun and I live in Sheffield, Yorkshire. My link to Mull is my GG Grandfather, Neil Colquhoun born to Dugald Colquhoun and Christina McLucas in about 1830. Dugald and Christina had many other children and I only have knowledge of one other, Archibald. The whole family were on Skye by the 1841 census. As a result of this thread I have gone back to my tree and I've discovered a few others I have found over the years who come from Mull too (McInnes, McDonald, McFadyen and Henderson). So I must look further into these lines. Thanks Linda for re-awakening my interest in my Mull lines. Effy mckinnon had a son Hector born 16th June 1868 in Uisken. There is no fathers name on birth certificate, I assume she named the child after her late father. Young Hector is on the 1871 census living with his grandmother Margaret McKinnon in Ardchiavaig. Anyone know what happened to Euphemia and Hector? John McKinnon Gibb
Hi John This is interesting.. In the IGI I finding a Hector MacKinnon born Jun 16 1868 KLF C115421, 0653 only the mother as Effy MacKinnon listed here but a Helen Jane Euphemia McKinnon born Sep 5 1871 KLF C115421, 0827 here it has Hugh MacKinnon & Euphemia MacInnes listed as parents this might be worth checking out futher .
