Hi Margaret, I believe this is your Janet. She married John McFarlane, son of Allan McFarlane and Catherine Livingston from Ardtun, on 10th of December 1857 at Uisken. The son John who you mention was Janet's illigitimate son born about 1848. His father is unkown. Janet and John had 2 children both born at Milton, Glasgow :- Angus 26 Apr 1865 Allan 19 Jul 1868 When living in Glasgow, John worked as a labourer in a distillery and they lived in Water Street close to Janet's brother Cormick and his family and Janet's son lived with them. Their son Angus does not appear on any census and may have died in childhood. John died from bronchitis on the 20th of January 1881 and the informant was Janet's brother Cormick. I have found no record of Janet's death so she could have emigrated after John died. 1871 Milton District : Page No : 6 House No : 52 Locality : Water Street McFarlane John 43 Head Labourer in Distillery Kilfinichen McFarlane Janet 41 wife Kilfinichen McCormick John 23 stepson iron dresser Kilfinichen McFarlane Allan 3 son Glasgow Beale James 58 boarder labourer Brechin 1881 Barony District : 72 Page No : 4 House No : 52 Locality : Water Street McFarlane Janet 51 W Head Housekeeper Kilfinichen McFarlane Allan 13 son scholar Glasgow Beale James 69 boarder General labourer Brechin McLaren Elizabeth 47 widow domestic servant Peebles Hope this is of some help. Hi June Have you seen John McCormick's birth record? If so, is he recorded under McCormick or McFarlane? On the 1851 census he is recorded as McFarlane. Hi Margaret, The John you are refering to to is Janet's brother. This is son John with Janet's family in 1851. I think the name is probably due to a transcription error or posibly the census taker. 1851 Kilfinichen & Kilvicheon Page No : 143 House No : 26 Locality : Uisken MacCormick Donald 71 W Head crofter 4a Kilfinichen MacCormick Malcolm 17 s Kilfinichen MacCormick Catherine 14 d Kilfinichen MacAuslane John 3 gs Kilfinichen ....and after a bit more digging, also found them in Glasgow on the 1861 census:- 1861 Barony District : Page No : 2 House No : 91 Locality : Maitland Street McFarlane John 34 Head Labourer Kilfinichen McFarlane Janet 32 wife Kilfinichen McFarlane John 13 son Kilfinichen McDonald John 42 lodger labourer Kilfinichen John was born about 1848 but his birth does not seem to have been registered. Registration did not become menditory until 1855. Hi June Thanks for this and thanks especially for tracking Janet down in the 1861 census. Bit surprised they had no children before Angus and Allan. Maybe they did and they died in infancy? Angus died aged 15 months in 1866. I had seen the 1851 record before and supposed that MacAuslane was a transcription error for MacFarlane. I'd assumed that John MacFarlane aged three was Janet's son by John McFarlane and that they simply hadn't bothered to get married until 1857. I couldn't find any trace of Allan in the 1891 census so you could be right in thinking that they emigrated after John's death. Certainly family correspondence between Janet's younger sister Catherine and her husband in Oregon and their cousin Professor Donald McKinnon in Edinburgh seems to suggest that Janet is living in the US at the time. I've passed your information on to a distant American cousin who located Catherine and Malcolm for me in Oregon but couldn't trace Janet.
