The following is from an article published in the Standard Freeholder newspaper, Cornwall, Ontario, 1951, by Jenny MacLean [my aunt]. She reproduced the article about "Finch" Township by Sara Eamon written in 1931. The following might be of interest: "Peter MacLean landed at Montreal, ascended the Ottawa River to B ytown and followed the Rideau to Perth where some of his people had settled.and where he, too, expected to settle. Later he came to Finch to visit relative, Lachlan MacLean, father of George L. MacLean [my grandfather..mc] Hector MacLean, a brother, and sister, Ann, settled on next farm. They walked all the way from Perth .......the MacLeans had an adventurous passage across the Atlantic. They came over on the vessel "The Catharine of Belfast"....." The aforementioned Hector MacLean, first cousin to my great grandfater, Lachlan MacLean, wrote an article for a Montreal newspaper about the 'crossing'. They began the journey from Tobermory on the Catharine of Belfast in May 1843, but the ship floundered after some weeks at sea and landed in Belfast where the passengers had to wait until September 2nd, 1843, to board another ship, "The John and the Robert". Many of the passengers landed near Canso, and twenty two others continued on to Quebec City where my gt grandfather and his siblings and widowed mother, and Hector and his widowed mother and siblings continued to join relatives in Cornwall. The venture to Perth didn't last too long for Peter[Padraig] and Hector. Peter MacLean is buried in the Goldfireld Cemetery west of Finch Village, and Hector and Lachlan, my gt grandfather, are buried in the Finch Cemetery. Some of this might be familiar to you because it has been posted a few years ago, but I thought, perhaps, that more information might be forthcoming about the MacLeans in/or near the town of Perth in Ontario. There is a cemetery named "The Colquhoun" Cemetery just east of the village of Williamsburg in Dundas County, Ontario [SDandG] [my graunduncle is buried in the Colquhoun Cem] Also, I knew members of a Colquhour family a long time ago which had lived in Cornwall.at one time but I don't think there are any members of that family now living in Cornwall. The name "Colquhoun" was not a name connected to SDandG. That was interesting to note that they might have come from Lanark County. and from Isle of Tiree. I do know that I was always told that my grandfather was 'related' to the MacLeans at Perth, and the family in Cornwall, but not to the MacLean family at Osnabruck Centre [south of Finch] who came from Kinlochaline] but I don't have any details. In the same way, a descendant of John MacLean, son of Neil MacLean, born 1759 Dervaig, Isle of Mull, toldl my cousin and me that we descended from his "John", but I can' t find the detailsl, although from a photograph I have of my great grandfather, Lachlan MacLean, he resembles Archibald MacLean, born 1791 [son of Neil] in a very uncanny manner. I do know we are related to the family that had lived in Cornwall. The family at Finch[Goldfield] was also known as the 'Duart" MacLeans. it's difficult to trace back on these families for more details, even though there is a relationship. i.e. = the MacLeans of Moose Creek, Ontario, and the family at Dunvegan migrated form the Isle of Skye, and the MacLean family which had settled at Greenfield, Ontario, emigrated from Lochaber. The MacLeans at Goldfiield were related to each other, but another MacLean family three miles north of Finch village at Berwick had emigrated in the Selkirk emigration and came from Isle of Uist.. I was curious about Lanark and town of Perth because of what was told to me. John MacLean who was married to Flora MacInnes was born about 1789 on Mull. These families were so large and had so many children...all, usually, with the same first names..... Was your John MacLean related to the John MacLean who remained in Lanark County, and to the Lachlan MacLean of Lanark County? They seem to have been a geneartion older than Hector and Lachlan, my gt. Sometimes, these families settled together in one location[i.e Finch[Goldfield] Cornwall//Stormont/and, or Lanark]. Druimighigha seems to be the key word. The locations named Redel [Reudle] Burg and Druimighigha on the Torloisk property seemed to be 'connected' to my Goldfireld MacLeans. I think that John MacLean who married Flora MacInnes was from Fanmore, not too distant to Burg and Reudel [also on Torloisk property][two of his descendants told me that my Mother was their third cousin]. Hector was born at Druimighigha.[my gt grandfather's first cousin] If our MacLeans havea connection to Druimighigha and settled in Lanark, then they might possibly be distantly related to Hector and Lachlan. Just a thought. Margaret Cameron Long Sault Ontario
Hello Margaret: I am still trying to put all these McLeans together as there are so many Johns and Lachlans. Have started making up a card for each Mclean and after I get through all the messages plus what I have, maybe something will come up better. Thank you for your information. If you have any pictures of the McLeans or Colquhouns, would it be possible to get a scanned copy from ;you as I have many old pictures from the farm that I have no idea who they are, but most are taken in Toronto, Ontario. Thanks again.
