Mull Listeners: Just a note about the Wick Cemetery also called the McNeil Cemetery. Most of the old Scottish section of the cemetery has no plot plan of where people are buried other than looking at the stones that are still there. My gr. grandafather's brother Neil McNeil left the land for the cemetery as it was part of the old farm and I was very upset when there for a celebration, that they didn't even know where he was buried or any of my other relatives without looking for stones. I did find it though and many other Scots that came to Brock Townhip. When I complaiined about it, they said " Oh, its just the old part of the cemetery" which was quite disturbing to me. There are several “Open Door” sites hosted in or near Manilla on Sunday September 11, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Unfortunately, the Wick cemetery in Brock, which has many Mull burials, is not part of this event. Though of course you can still visit it without a Host being on site. Nearby, the Scotch Cemetery in Brock Township is part of the event under the auspices of the local Brock Township Municipal Council in cooperation with Open Doors Ontario. The Scotch Cemetery has the second largest concentration of Tiree burials in Canada, (Tiverton being the first). Interestingly, the Manilla Library will be open -- it has been closed to the public for 10 years awaiting restoration of the interior. Who knows what it may hold? For more information and links to Open Door events, please go to my website: http://www.tireegathering.com and Click on Scotch Cemetery 2011. Paul Hector is the organizer and Site Guide for the Scotch Cemetery, and he can be contacted through my website. I hope to be posting photos and a list of the Gathering attendees after the event.
