Hello Jacqueline, The list has been pretty quiet since mid-August. There were a couple of messages at the end of August - one from you, I believe, but that's about it. Hopefully traffic will pick up again - it was lovely and busy for a a couple of months over the summer :) Linda www.ancestralplaces.co.uk On 9/7/2011 6:59 PM, Jacqueline Archibald wrote: > Anyone getting messages from the list? Linda I like your site. re Effy McPhail was born in 1768, daughter of Donald McPhail and Katherine Campbell. Effy McPhail was baptized on 17 July 1768. Have you anymore info on this branch of McPhail. This is about the date of my Effie McPhail who married Neil McDougall(Mclullich) in Torosay. They were in GARMONY in 1841. I visited there when I was over in July. Tricia ________________________________ From: Linda M. Towne <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Linda www.ancestralplaces.co.uk
Thank you Tricia. Unfortunately the only other information I have on Effy McPhail is that she had siblings: Susanna (12 Aug 1770); Donald (10 Jul 1774) and Ann (25 May 1776). Good luck with your research! Greetings to all, As there seems to be a bit of a lull on the list at the moment I might take the opportunity to ask a silly question. My ancestor, ggg/grandfather David Borrie was head gardener at Torloisk on the Isle of Mull from the early 1820's till his death in 1876. He had two children by his first marriage, (wife Isobel McLeod). I am descended from the second of these children. David married again (wife Catherine McDonald or McLean). By this second marriage he had a further 4 children, all girls, and these remained at Torloisk all their lives working in the laundry and dairy and also as maidservants in the main house on the estate. My question is, what relationship are these later children and their descendants to me? Half something or other I would imagine. Thankyou, Barry Howard Victoria, Australia.
Hello Barry, Yes, you are correct--they would be "half"--same father, different mother. I have many half cousins from my grandfather's first marriage. You say you are descended from the 2nd child by his first marriage. Whatever relationship you have determined for the sibling of your ancestor, then the children by the 2nd marriage would be the same--only just add "half" to the relationship, i.e. half third cousin, etc. Clear as mud??
