Hi I just noticed on the Family Search site that PAF downloads and support have been discontinued as of July 15. There are three programmes listed to which PAF files can easily be transferred. Hi In my opinion there is too many unelected civil servants who think they are above reproach, making decisions that they should have no jurisdiction over .I am sure we could manage better without a large number of them and there escalated salaries could go to a much more efficient use . It should be given to Automated Genealogy also. I have found it is easier quite often to find people in the ones transcribed by Automated Genealogy than the one by Ancestry. Hi Isabella I have found the scotlandspeople website a particularly useful site. In my own experience I traced all my grandfathers siblings who moved to the Glasgow area from Mull in the 1850s,60s & 70s & including my grandfather who moved to the same area prior to his emigrating to NZ in 1879 by using this site. It comes at a cost but I have found the expense to be well worthwhile. Dear Everyone, Library and Archives Canada (LAC) took custody of the 1921 census of the Canadian population from Statistics Canada on June 1st of this year after the required 92 years; and last week, on August 8th, released it to the public via Ancestry.ca - presently for free. This is good news, since universities, historical societies and genealogical societies had to fight the former head of Stats Can for years to get the 1911 census made public. He claimed the Prime Minister of the day, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, had promised not to make the personal info public. Consequently groups had to take him to court, all the way through the system to the Supreme Court of Canada, to force the 1911 release!! In the end the head did not have one piece of documentation to back up his assertion! So much, for the hubris of a civil servant! And the empire-building. This time, the not-quite-great news is that the present government has seen fit to release the 1921 census to Ancestry.ca. The president of the Ontario Genealogical Society has written a letter with eight questions re the release - all valid. "Canadians will be required to pay for the extra convenience of doing advanced searches from their home" says LAC, (though free at all libraries). It appears on the surface that this present government, true to its principles, is determined not to offer a social benefit to Canadians without a conservative monetary benefit. Let's hope this changes. For more details go to the OGS website. All the best. Elizabeth.
