    3. âHi John, I'm not sure if this will help, but I've just been through this myself. My family was McInnes, they lived in 'Iona Parish' in 1841 before coming to Lochaber, Quebec. Turns out that area took in the Ross of Mull area -most of the people who came to Quebec were actually residents on Mull itself, not so much the island. 3. Hi Ian, Thank you very much for your help. I think I gave you the information listed below. Could you please add my name to your subscribers list as researching this family? June has sent me some wonderful photos which were just what I was after. Just looking at them I can picture the family living there! It must have been so cold in the wintertime. I have been reading on travel sites that it is very windy at Kintra. Is that correct? How cold does it get in the wintertime and how warm in the summer? I would love to visit but I don't think that is going to be possible. Maybe one day! Thank you so much for all the work you do Ian with the site. I am generally quiet as far as the list goes but I do appreciate reading the postings and checking out the site. Your kindness in sharing information and helping people with their research is wonderful. 3. Jan I'm more than a little bit more than bewildered why you're having a moan at me !! Mullgenealogy is Ian's website and he's the person that should be contacted should a question arise. I've spoken to Ian off list, and he's happy to be notified of any errors/duplication. As far as I'm aware, I'm not related to any of these families, but what's the harm in pointing out inacurracies ? I make mistakes, we all do : but I'm happy to have any pointed out so they can be corrected. As I tend to MullFamilies many hours/day, I don't have time to check who's submitted the info, nor to contact them. For privacy issues, I don't post email addresses on site. Contacting you directly would be an invasion of your privacy. Also, once information is on a website, it's there to be seen by anyone who visits that site (whether their family or not). : it's in the public domain. You're horrified that I spend 12 hours/day researching and updating my website ??!! Surely you should be applauding me for the dedication, being a pro-active webmaster, breaking down brick walls and generally keeping 200 website members quite happy, thank you. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Mary McInnes from Kintra - Writing a book!
    2. Joy and John
    3. Hi Everyone, When doing family research one family member often attracts our attention more than the others. For me it has been my GG Grandmother, Mary McInnes. Mary was born in Kintra in 1835. Her family is listed on the 1841 Census as follows: Dugald MacInnes, age 30, Boatman, born in Parish Mary, age 30, born in Parish Christina, age 9, born in Parish Mary, age 6, born in parish Sandy [Alexander], age 2, born in Parish Duncan, age 7 months, born in Parish They came to Australia in January 1849 aboard the Maitland. I have a lot of information about this family and their descendents in Australia and I really want to share it with my descendents. I don't want these stories and my research to disappear so I have decided to try to write a book so that my family will have a record of it all. I do not have a lot of information about her life and family in Mull and would really appreciate any information that anyone is willing to share with me. I am happy to acknowledge anyone's contribution. I also would love some photos of Kintra and Iona, particularly old ones, that I could use. Again I am happy to make note of who the photos belong to. I am not anticipating that this book will be published in large quantities but you never know. I am really writing it for my family. If anyone can help me in any way I would be most grateful. Thank you very much. Kind regards to all. Joy in Australia.

    3. Further to this post, I have other thoughts worth sharing The following Census 1841-1861(trimmed from Mullgenealogy) is what I think are the one family . As dau Margaret/Peggy died 1855 Catchean, it looks like the 1841 Tir Fearagain family is the Iona one (Parents Donald & Isabella also dying Catchean) This actually makes more sense, as children Catherine & Angus are not with this family, but are part of the Tobermory lot 1841 Kilfinichen Tirergain McGilvra Donald 40 Agric Labourer Y in Parish McGilvra Isabella 40 Y in Parish McGilvra John 15 Y in Parish McGilvra Niel 14 Y in Parish McGilvra Mary 12 Y in Parish McGilvra Pegy 6 Y in Parish McGilvra Marion 2 Y in Parish McGilvra Jessy 15 Y in Parish 1851 Iona Fionnphort McGilvray Donald 60 Farms 4a Kilfinichen McGilvray Bell 50 w Kilfinichen McGilvray John 30 s shoemaker Kilfinichen McGilvray Janet 31 dil >>>>>> nee ? m. 3. Trying to unravel the NUMEROUS Donald McGilvray-Isabella McArthur families I'll use Mullgenealogy's census records for ease of use On Mullgenealogy there's the following listed Isobel MCARTHUR Birth : abt 1800 Baptised : Died : 16 Nov 1861, Catchean, Isle of Mull, Argyllshire, Scotland Buried : Father : John MCARTHUR Mother : Janet MCPHIE Marriage 1 : Donald MCGILVRAY 1 Feb 1820 Children John (bir) 12 Feb 1821 - Hector (bap) 9 Jan 1822 - Jannet (bap) 24 Aug 1823 - 31 Mar 1912 Neil (bap) 14 Apr 1824 - 3 Feb 1901 Neil (bap) 24 Feb 1826 - Flora (bir) 16 Apr 1827 - Hector (bir) 11 Oct 1828 - Catherine (bir) abt 1829 - Mary (bir) 12 Sep 1830 - 19 Jan 1893 Marrion (bir) 3 Aug 1831 - Margaret (bap) 15 Jun 1833 - Peggy (bap) 9 Jun 1835 - 1 Jul 1855 Angus (bir) abt 1835 - Ann (bir) abt 1836 - Marrion (bap) 9 Jun 1838 - Alarm bells started ringing when I saw 15 children listed (possible but improbable) Looking at the Census we have firstly the Iona family 1841 Kilfinichen & Kilvicheon District No : 9 Page No : 6 House No : 23 Locality : Kilimore 18412446 McGilvray Donald 50 Cotter Y in Parish >> died 1863 Catchean McGilvray Isabella 45 Y in Parish >> died 1861 Catchean McGilvray Hector 18 Y in Parish McGilvray Cathrine 12 Y in Parish McGilvray Angus 7 Y in Parish McGilvray Ann 5 Y in Parish McPhee Angus 50 Y in Parish Now we see the Tir Fearagain family 1841 Kilfinichen & Kilvicheon District No : 1 Page No : 2 House No : 7 Locality : Tirergain 18412007 McGilvra Donald 40 Agric Labourer Y in Parish McGilvra Isabella 40 Y in Parish McGilvra John 15 Y in Parish > John above ? If these 6 children are removed from the Iona family, that would leave a managable 9 children (about average) To further complicate matters, I have a possible third family (excluding even more from Kilninian) This 'third' family had a dau Catherine/Ketty, dau Flora who married Allan McMaster of Kilmallie, and a son Angus who died 1877 Tobermory This is the 'third' family 1861 & 1871 Census 1861 Tobermory District No : 2 Page No : 8 House No : 39 Locality : Argyle Terrace 18616188 MacGilvray Donald 64 Head Labourer Parish of Kilfichen MacGilvray Isabella 60 Wife Labourer's wife Parish of Kilfichen >> nee McArthur MacGilvray Ketty 30 Dau Parish of Kilfichen Campbell Mary 6 Niece Parish of Kilfichen MacLean Jessy 2 Niece Tobermory ??? 3. Forgive me Michael but what is TNG.? I haven't tried your website but i should explain that the original of the 1841 census that I handed on to Ian came from sitting at the LDS film (hired in for me) and copying line for line so there may well have been errors in that work that I unwittingly passed on to Ian when I passed the 8 parishes on in toto. I copied it into a booklet and then onto my computer as at that stage I did not have a lap top. It is a much easier job now as I think this was done about 20 years ago when I retired !!!. jean -----Original Message----- From: sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of MF Sent: Wednesday, 18 September 2013 10:17 PM To: sct-isleofmull@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] MullGenealogy.co.uk - thanks to Ian Ian & Listers It's a difficult job handling so many names. I put my hand up to having made errors, and no doubt the odd few exist. While I agree that webmasters need to be informed of anything amiss, I conscientiously seek out errors/duplication. I think this may be a 'time' issue. Ian, I've no idea whether you are in employment or not, or how much time each day you spend on Mullgenealogy. On average, I work on MullFamilies 12 hours per day, 7 days a week (some days, a mind-numbing 16-17 hours) Some errors/duplication are difficult to see, yet others can stand out like a sore thumb. It would be utopian if everything was as it should be, but over time we strive to 'get there'. Personally, I think that Mullgenalogy is a good website with lots to offer. Ian has given me his reasons for not going 'TNG', but I'd be lost without it. Linda too is doing a good job with Ancestralplaces. For those Listers that have not seen a TNG website, I have created a temporary password to enable viewing.
