Hi. I've been searching on Scotland's People for a birth on Ulva between 1745 and 1755, but there is no Kilninian parish. What was the situation at that time? Was there another parish that covered Ulva? Kind regards, Cynthia Wardle

Hello Kevin, I would consider it the same family. This is a cottar family that has lived through the Potato famine so even if they did add a few years to their ages they probably looked as old as they claimed. You could check their death certificates to see when they may have been born - this is sometimes a bit 'out' as well, depending on who the witness is. Many thanks for your comments which are really helpful. Ive found Martins death certificate on Scotland's People which shows that he died 6 April 1866 at Uisken, aged 74 and the death was notified by Duncan Campbell (nephew) not present, which could also contribute for the age discrepancy. Shows married to Christina Beaton, so am sure its the right one and parents listed as Archibald Campbell and Margaret McGilvray. Ian, i didnt know about the rounding of ages in 1841. Jan, i have a photo of Martin Campbell, and he certainly looked like he had a hard life! Tough, if Martin died before 1855 which is always a disappointment. Hi John I'm not sure if I've mentioned this or not but have you access to the LDS (Latter Day Saints) site or facility. As there is a James A Cameron listed as having done research on your family see his film with 0178143, film he's mentioned in alot of the IGI's information for different surnames. Hello Kevin, One of the other factors to take into account in the rounding of ages in the 1841 census. Directions to Enumerators for the 1841 Census. For infants under one year of age, state the number of months. >From one year to 15 state the age on the last birthday. For persons 15 years and upwards, write as follows, instead of the exact age. For persons between the ages of 15 and 20 write 15 20 and 25 write 20 25 and 30 write 25 30 and 35 write 30 35 and 40 write 35 40 and 45 write 40 45 and 50 write 45 50 and 55 write 50 55 and 60 write 55 60 and 65 write 60 65 and 70 write 65 70 and 75 write 70 I take it that you know the family are also in the 1861 census and the 1871 minus Martin Hope this helps. Hi all, I was reviewing the information i have and noticed an anomaly i hope that someone can help with. This is in relation to Martin Campbell (abt 1784 - abt 1866, Kilfinichen)( my GGG Grandfather) and his wife Christina Beaton (abt 1804 - 1890). I see on the tree i have, that in the 1841 census at Ardchiavaig i have the following: Martin Campbell 35. Ag Lab Christina 32 Margaret 70 (McGillivray?) John. 16 Archibald 14 Margaret. 12 Jannet. 10 Donald. 8 Nicol 6 Alexander. 4 Anne/a. 1 Whereas on the 1851 census at Ardchiavaig is Martin. 57. Cottar receiving alms Christina 47 Donald 17 Nicol. 15 Alexander. 13 Ann. 11 Elizabeth. 9 Angus. 6 James. 4 Given the similarities with the age of the children, and that assumed that John, Archibald, Margaret and Jannet have moved out, what could explain the age variations for Martin and Christina? Could they have lied in order to receive alms? Or are they just not the same family. Any thoughts, comments or suggestions much appreciated! Many thanks in advance, Kevin

Ian & all Well, knock me down with a feather !! Clearly our definitions of webmaster/site owner differ somewhat, and your comments contradict what you said to me. Using an analogy, if a dog poops on your doorstep, you clean it up. Never mind, I want to keep the peace and no more postings will come from me. Hi John! I have an Allan Cameron b. Scotland abt 1816, no parents or siblings as of yet but marrying a MacArthur, having 9 children in Ontario, first born being Angus, b. Abt 1852-53... -----Original Message----- From: sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Cameron Sent: September-21-13 9:12 AM To: sct-isleofmull@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] McGilvray's of Iona Does anyone on the list have any idea of the names of parents and/or siblings of my ggg grandmother Marrion McGilvray? She was born c 1788, I believe on Iona. Her marriage to Angus Cameron on March 25, 1811 is shown in the Kilfinichen Parish records, which lists them both as residents of Iona. The birth/baptism of their first four children, including my gg grandfather John Cameron, are also in the OPR. Then in about 1820 they left for Quebec, Canada, where the next four children were born. Hi Michael, >> Mullgenealogy is Ian's website and he's the person that should be contacted should a question arise. The main purpose of placing the source on the website is so that individuals can contact directly the supplier of the information in order to verify or exchange information if they are related. In either case I would like to think that they would then notify me via the list of any additions or corrections. I have plenty to do without acting as a go between in such cases. I do not consider myself to be the person to contact when a questions arises. I would much rather the two individuals worked together off-line in order to arrive at the correct information. It would also reduce the amount of traffic on the list which would in the large part be of no interest to most list subscribers. Once a consensus has been agreed is the time for a posting when others will have the opportunity to comment. Please keep up the good work breaking down the walls but equally remember that sitting for such long period at a computer screen is not good for your eyes. It would not be allowed and even then you would be expected to take at least five minutes in every hour away from the screen. All I'm saying is please be careful. Hello All, I am a little bit bewildered to say the least as to why you have not contacted me about this entry of Mull Genealogy Michael as it is so very obviously MY mistake and certainly not Ians. My contact address is up to date and I am recorded as the source of the information. I, like Jean had written down a lot of this from the original documents on Mull as far back as 1981 and some of the pages were very hard to read - not quite like today's hit a button and then complain if it isn't perfect! As I wrote down hundreds of entries over the week that I spent at both the Tobermory Museum and the old Ross of Mull FH site, I don't doubt that there are a lot more mistakes out there. I am not quite sure which one of these families you are related to, but if anyone had contacted me I would have looked to see why I had made the mistake and then asked Ian to change it. I would appreciate it in future that you do that instead of constantly putting up changes for Ian when those changes have to come from the source of the information, and it would be better if you contacted those people off line as then the site doesn't have to get involved with something that isn't productive. The greater majority of information that Ian has on his site from me has never been on the Rootsweb site. I gave it to him so as others researching their OWN family trees could have that information or could contact me in regard to other contacts I may have. I certainly didn't expect it to be used in any other way. Oh, and by the way, if I thought Ian was sitting at his computer 12 hours a day 7 days a week I would be horrified as would we all. Ian has a life and although a lot of his time has been dedicated to the Mull Genealogy site over many years, His move to Mull was long anticipated and one hopes he is out there enjoying every minute of it - weather permitting.
