I am conscious that this could easily go "off topic", but whatever the position I suggest erring on the side of caution and receiving and sending e-mails in plain text, reducing possibility of virus borne (background) html and not opening unknown attachments. Dull it may be but it is safe. Some mail programs will insert e-mail html content as an attachment. On the subject of being without support it is possible to chug along without it. I believe there are still some folk with Windows 95. PAF doesn't have support any longer and is being used I suspect on a wide scale and I've been using it without complications. I am given to understand that Windows for iPad is being attacked and that Android is safer, but nothing will always be safe. I would suggest transferring CD or DVD content onto a USB key if one needs to transport data. As an aside, I believe Roots Magic is key compatible which means the software can be uploaded to a key and transported. Hi all, I have just checked the visits to the MullGenealogy website and find that 20% of the visit are made by users of Microsoft XP operation system. You may be be aware that Microsoft is withdrawing support from XP in April 2014. This means that XP users will no longer get support via the automatic updates which updates not only the operating system but provides fixes against security risks and viruses. This does not mean that you computer will cease to function but it will be more vulnerable to security risks, attacks and viruses. Fuller details of the implications can be found at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/end-support-help Thought I ought to draw this to your attention. Happy New Year and Best Regards, Ian webmaster mullgenealogy.co.uk

Merry Christmas and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all Alec MacFadyen in New Zealand
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. Hope you all have success in breaking down your Brick Walls in 2014. Regards Les Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device
Merry Christmas to all from snowy Minnesota! I'm thankful to Ian and all the wonderful subscribers who have helped me find my ancestors from Mull. All the best, Dana Kelly
Hi All, Well yet another year has come and nearly gone so it's time for me to wish you all a Happy Christmas and hope that the New Year brings whatever you are hoping for. I have not done the travelling that I did last year to New Zealand and Australia but did get to Switzerland and France. I guess the major event website wise was the addition of the 1911 census records for Mull and surrounding islands which I hope some of you have found useful. As most of you will know I help out at the Mull Museum here in Tobermory. This was the busiest year ever with over 23,000 visitors. To my surprise and delight a number of those visitors were from the this list. At one point in the season I had a visitor from the list every Monday afternoon when I was on duty so in this respect it was also my busiest season ever. Would be great to think that 2014 will bring an even larger number of visitors to the Museum and also from the list. I would ask those thinking of visiting to let me know in advance as it is difficult to answer queries whilst on duty in the Museum and a little unfair to other Museum visitors if I try to concentrate on your queries. As an aside, Calmac report 350,000 visitors to the island this year. You may remember earlier this year I asked you to let me know of any changes / improvements that you be made to assist you searching of the databases. I received one suggestion. This was to allow the selection of census records by a year or range of years. I have also added a Google Search function ("Search" on the menu at the top of the screen) . This will allow you to search the whole of the website for a given string. It will not however return all names in the Surname and Census databases nor will it return records with alternative forename or surname spellings. The website has been as busy as ever with hits over the last month from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Russian Federation, Spain, Italy, Singapore and Poland. Really make me wonder why some of the hits come from where they do. As ever at this time I must thank all of you who have helped to make MullGenealogy the website what it is today. Without your collective contributions it would not have been possible to make it as comprehensive as it is. Please keep the contributions and corrections (these are just, if not more important) coming. All contributions are freely given on the understanding that they are made freely available to others for the personal research of their direct families. A special thanks must go to Ida (our list monitor) for keeping us in line and stopping the list falling into other hands as happened with the Tiree list with devastating results. In order to overcome the problem the Coll list now takes both Coll and Tiree postings. This Christmas Elizabeth and I will be at home which is just as well when looking at the weather forecast. It could be that the 16.00 ex Oban will be the last sailing before Christmas as we are forecast to have gales+ all tomorrow. I feel sorry for those who are trying to get away and those who are hoping to back home for Christmas. Anyway, have yourselves a great Christmas wherever you are spending it and an equally good New Year. Look forward to a rather more active list next year. Best wishes, Ian
