    3. Hi Jim, Nice to meet another McLean descendant! If I understand your message correctly, there should be an 8 page attachment? If so, I did not get it. Your Allen McLean (baptised 12/2/1811), is it the same one that married 2/29/1844 Catherine Dawson (1823-1892)? If so, then he must be a son of Donald, born 1772 Fort William, Argyllshire, Scotland, died 10/10/1855 Strathalbyn, South Australia, married to Christina McPhee? I have not seen the red book you referenced, but if possible for you to re-send the 8 pages, I would love to read them. Thanks for contacting me! 3. Hi Fellow Listers, Is any fellow lister tracing Campbell's? I have two Campbell ladies who married two Fraser brothers, namely John and Simon but am not sure if the two Campbell ladies were related to each other. John Fraser (son of Alexander (Sandy) Fraser) christened June 4th, 1789 in Coll, Argyll married Catherine Campbell daughter of Donald Campbell and Ann MACLAINE who was christened on 3rd March 1799 in Kilninian, Isle of Mull. John's brother Simon married a Janet Campbell around the same time. Catherine died in 1877 in Australia. Regards, Marianne.

    2. Kathy and Shane Maclean
    3. Hi, Jan: My name is Kathy Maclean and my husband is Shane Maclean. His family came originally from the Ross of Mull and we're planning on heading to Scotland in 2008 with one of our sons and his family. We live 60 miles east of Toronto, Ontario, in the small, pretty community of Cobourg. We'd love to have you come stay with us for a few days during your travels. We can take you to Port Credit for lunch since it's only a couple of hours away. We have never been to a Mull luncheon but have considered going. I don't know how much of Ontario you have explored, but we'd like to show you our area. Anyway, please think about it. We love visitors. 2. From: "Jacqueline Archibald" <h.j.arch@ns.sympatico.ca> > Would anyone on the list have the book by David Dobson, "Directory of Scottish > Settlers in North America 1625 to 1825"? Jacqueline in N.S.: Ancestry has about 31 of his books digitized, but I don't see that particular title although there are several that overlap that time frame. Beware though, if you start reading one, they get to be addictive! Search the catalog and use Dobson as a keyword, click on the title to see the actual book. ecunningham@att.net

    3. Hello, The best area to search for your Mull ancestors would be Cape Breton Island, during the first part of the 19th century thousands of people from the Highlands especially Mull, Uist and Barra, settled there, my MacEachern family included, in Boisdale, the church at Boisdale, St Andrew's is very beautiful especially and many Mull pioneers are buried around the Bras D'or lakes, you may also want to check out Prince Edward Island as well. 3. Hello Karl, Thank you for replying, I will certainly include PEI in my plans. I will be reading up on the area to see if I can get to where I want to go by public transport. I have a travel book with pictures of the area and it all looks so beautiful. I visited BC and Montreal over 20 years ago and found the trees overwhelming, we don't have such abundant trees here in Australia. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Jan's trip
    2. Jo-Anne Mills
    3. Hi Jan Hope this helps a bit with your plans. 1. I find that the leaves in the Maritimes are usually the best around the last week in Sep and the first week in Oct. A spectacular sight to see would be to go around the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia during the changing of the leaves. While in Cape Breton some sites to see would be the Gaelic College, Fortress Louiseburg and there is an old Scottish village in Iona. (http://www.gaeliccollege.edu/index.php). 2. There were a number of different families from Mull that settled in different parts of the Maritimes. My family settled in Grey County just outside Owen Sound, Ontario. A number of Scottish families settled on one concession and behind it the next concession was called the Irish Block. 3. Fredericton and Halifax both offer history. In the Halifax area I have been to Citadel Hill, The Bell Tower which was built to remember the people killed when two ships (one loaded with explosives) collided in Halifax harbour. There is also a cemetery that is the last resting place for people that died during the sinking of the Titanic. I live just outside of Fredericton and in the downtown core there is the Garrison District, plus more. About 30 minutes out of Fredericton is King's Landing. It takes you back to life in the 19th century. You should google each of the sites to make sure they will be open by the time you plan on coming this way. Here is a website for hostel accommodations. http://reservations.bookhostels.com/bootsnall.com/findabed.php?PHPSESSID=ri3qp21arjigapto8u5ur67o7e5giaq8 4. I am not familiar with sites around Montreal but if you get a chance to stop in Quebec City, there is the Citadel and the Plains of Abraham. 5. I have no info to help you with your number 5. 6. Greyhound buses don't come into the Maritimes. They start at Montreal and go west. There are other bus services that come from the States to the Maritimes or maybe you could check and see if the trains from the States come this way. Hope some of this will be helpful. We haven't had much of a winter this year, but don't forget we have our winter starting anytime in Oct or Nov through to Apr-May. That is why a number of our tourist sites close for the winter. They usually close between the Labour Day weekend (first weekend in Sep) and Thanksgiving Day (this year second Monday in Oct). If there is anything in particular that you would like info on in the Fredericton area please contact me at nootkajo@gmail.com and I will try and find the answers.

    1. Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Grace M'Lennan
    2. Marianne McKenna
    3. Hi Fellow Listers, Whilst on holidays recently I have had a little time to spend on family history. My great aunt (Jessie Fraser b July 21st, 1862 Aust. d August 5th, 1947 Aust.) left behind a very interesting birthday book full of titbits of family information although most is cryptic to us as she did not reveal to whom any one was related just their birthday or some other notation for the date without the year. However, it has proved most useful in tracking some of our more distant family members namely females by elimination of who they married - a difficulty when surnames change. Within the pages of this birthday book is a small newspaper clipping (no recording of source or date of publication! - most probably Australia) for the following: "M'Lennan. On the 14th Ult, at Sale, Grace, relict of the Late Christopher M'Lennan, a native of Mull. Aryleshire. Scotland age 64 years." I have contacted the Sale Public Cemetery in Victoria who provided me with the following information:- "Record of burial. Grace McLennan. d. 15 September 1892. aged 64 years. Residence, Stratford Road, Occupation. Widow. Minister. Cannon Watson. Cause of death. Heart Disease. Allotment. 42. Section E. Plan 4. " The source of this information was the Secretary of the Sale Public Cemetery. I was wondering if this is a relative of any of the list members and if so if they would like to share information about Grace. I am yet to discover if or where she fits into my Fraser Family but would be interested in finding out more. Ida (fellow lister) kindly responded to my personal e-mail with the following information and requested I post this to the list for all to share:- I'm not sure if this is your Grace Fraser or not but.....The only Fraser I found that has a Grace in it belongs to Simon Fraser and Janet Campbell who married Feb 8 1816 in KLN 6932125, 87 In the IGI they have the following 4 children: Duncan Feb 11 1817 KLN 6932119, 84 Mary Jan 18 1818 KLN 6932119, 85 Isabel Mar 11 1821 KLN 6932119, 85 Grace Jul 3 1825 KLN 6932119, 85 My research so far reveals my Grace did travel with her family to Australia onboard the British King which arrived in Sydney in 1839. Her father Simon Fraser travelled with his brother John Fraser and their 7 children of whom I am a descendant. If any one has further information about who Grace might be or would like to share what Fraser information I have please contact me, as I am only to willing to assist. I do have copies of some of the Victorian Indexes and am prepared to do lookups for fellow listers. Please be aware I am a nurse who works all sorts of crazy hours so your e-mails will be answered at all hours - mostly in the late night hours or early hours of the morning. Regards, Marianne.

    3. Hello Listers, I am to retire in July 2007 and am planning (Very basic at this stage) a trip through USA and Canada on my way to eventually ending up on my belovered Mull sometime in the later part of the year. What I would like to know is - 1. What month is the best to see the Fall leaves in the Maritimes Provences. 2. Which locations should I be looking to visit in regard to seeing where people from Mull origanally settled in Canada. 3. Would I be able to stay in Fredericton (They have a Hostel with my type of prices) and see a reasonable amount of history or should I stay in Halifax? 4. I have a friend in Montreal who I hope to be staying with so is there anything there I should be looking at? 5. As I intend to 'Lunch' at the Mill on the Bank of the Credit, where should I stay that is close to there. 6. Is Greyhound Buses the only way to go or are there local buses I should be looking at? My plans are very much in early days at this stage but working on the bigger picture and wanting to see as much as I can. I will be hopefully visiting a newly discovered long lost cousin in Oklahoma City and then coming up through Washington DC (For the Museums) and New York (Metropolital Museum of fine Art) and anywhere else I shouldn't miss. Sorry to ask so many questions but have only been as far as Quebec in Canada - that was from Bus from Vancouver so have seen the west and middle of the Country - well some of it. Grateful for any suggestion you can give me. Kind regards Jan Peasnell/Sydney/OZ

    3. Hi Janice, You are going to have a lot of ground to cover. LOL Lots to see in New York and New England, not to mention the Maritimes. You might want to google Pictou , Nova Scotia for their website. Quite a few of the settlers were Mull families. The site also lists places to stay and attractions,as well as links to many interesting things to do. There are also links to local genealogy groups in Pictou and New Glasgow. My own family settled on Pictou Island right in the middle of the Northumberland Strait between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. They have their own website too. If you are traveling by bus from New York City to up north anywhere you will probably travel up I-95 which passes about a mile away from my place in West Haven, CT. 3. Dear Jan (and everyone) I think the very best time and place in the Maritimes is early October in Cape Breton. There is something called Celtic Colours International Festival (Google it, they have a website) and it's a fabulous week of Celtic music and events.
