If Nancy is going to be in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, I'd really like to meet her too. Nancy has been a member of the Mull group since the very early days. Perhaps, if she reads this, she could let me know. Jill
Hi everyone, A member of the mull genealogy website is visiting NZ and Australia next month and I am catching up with her in Auckland. Nancy Cochener lives in Kansas USA and is a keen supporter of Clan McArthur in the US. We share a common ancestor in Chirsty McDonald (Archibald McDonald/Margaret Currie) from Ulva and Tobermory who married Donald McArthur, a shoemaker. Nancy's family has retained a Donald McArthur in every generation. She had an aunt, Sadie McArthur Hayden, who lives in New York and will turn 104 on March 16. She would be fascinating to talk to! I am meeting Nancy in Auckland on March 5 and we will be having a good catch-up, Regards, Helen Danes NZ _________________________________________________________________ Need a new job? I have a John Fletcher in my tree born in Torosay sometime about 1775-81, so naturally I was interested in your query. I have also had a chat with one of my Fletcher cousins still on Mull. Sadly we have not been able to find any link to your Neil beyond the information on his parents and siblings shown in the Mull Genealogy web site. We have also not been able to find any link to any names in the 1841 census. So effectively that family are "strays" at present although the OPRs do prove that they existed. Have you any other details of Fletchers in your tree and whether they emigrated? I have done searches in 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records looking at all Neil / Niel Fletchers born between 1790 and 1810 in order to eliminate them from the search for my ancestor Neil Fletcher born about 1801 according to the 1841 census in Banffshire but, he was not born in Banffshire. He died before 1844. No burial records are extant. I had the Kirk Session Records checked for any mention of Fletchers and mortcloth fees without success. Greetings from Western Australia fellow listers, Thank you Bob for responding to my cry for help! My Neil Fletcher was at the time of the births of his children a seaman (was your John Fletcher a seaman?). By the birth of his youngest child and on the 1841 census of Banffshire he was a grocer and spice merchant. The 1841 census indicated he was not born in Banffshire - born c.1800. He must have died between 1841 and 1844 when his wife married again in Banffshire. I can find no MIs, Burial records, mortcloth records of any sort for Neil. Neil's wife and new husband together with the only, I think, surving child, Alexander Fletcher, moved to Aberdeen where they appear on the 1851 & 1861 censuses. Shortly after the 1861 census, Alexander with his mother and step father moved to Nelson, New Zealand. His mother died there in 1868. Alexander married there in 1870 and promptly moved to Melbourne, Victoria. He is my mother's grand father. So, having researched all of the Neil, Niel Fletcher's born in Scotland 1795-1810 I am left with the view that my Neil Fletcher may by the one christened at Torosay in 1799. BUT, without proof? Thank you for making contact Bob. If you or any other listers have any ideas please let me know. Good Morning All I have been trying to find out what happened to the above individual. He appears in the Parish Register for Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon as the son of Donald Beaton and Christina McGilvray in 1830, registered on 15th September. He still seems to be in the Ross of Mull in the 1851 census when he appears in the household of the above (although listed as age 15 - but I have got used to dealing with odd ages at this point in time in the Ross of Mull) and his occupation given as agricultural labourer. However, between 1851 and 1861 he disappears off the census record, and I have been unable to find a record of his death in the statutory records, which gives me cause to think that he may have emigrated. His memory lived on in the family, as his younger brother John Beaton ,who married Catherine McLean in 1876 named one of his sons after him (this Donald b 1881 d 1917 Arras). The question I am asking is, has this individual turned up in anyone's research? Thanks James James Beaton Glasgow _________________________________________________________________ MSN Hotmail is evolving check out the new Windows Live Mail http://ideas.live.com
