I wonder if anyone has a connection to a boy John McMillan living with his Campbell relatives in Ballegown in 1861 Census? I have been looking at ancestry.co.uk and came across 'John McMillan' grandson in the 1861 Census for 'Ballegown', Mull. He is cited as being 4, born in abt 1857. It says that he is the grandson of Charles Campbell (aged 77) and his father is named John McMillan. The entry does not say who his mother is. Does anyone have a connection to this John McMillan? I hope someone can assist me with this, Regards to all Libby McMillan

Frank Great Scotsmen William McGonagall was born in Edinburgh but brought up in Orkney until his family moved to Dundee when he was 11. This was his true, spiritual home and no mistake. The City that would ultimately spawn such literary classics as "The Beano", "The Dandy", "The People's Friend" and last but by no means least "The Sunday Post", is a somewhat fitting scenario for a genius such as McGonagall's. http://www.firstfoot.com/Great%20Scot/gonagall.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_McGonagall Tricia
Hi Tricia There are many stories about William on the Internet, some true, some not. The family did spend some time in the Orkneys, one report says 3 years, but it may have been longer. Even William didn't get the facts right,he said his parents were born in Ireland, which is wrong. I proved thru BDM registration and Census that his father was born in Edinburgh and his mother in Maybole Ayr. Never the less he was a real character and he is coming back in favour. I believe that Dundee is going to stage a recently found play of his soon. Tricia Born Caithness ? A bit of trivia...In the 1861 census of Halkirk Caithness, the Dundee Poet ? William Gonagalls mother and father Charles McGonagall and Margaret Maxwell, were living there. They returned to Dundee where Charles died in 1865. The North Highland Archive didn't know this, but have now added it to their Archive. I did a small family tree project to find out if there was any connection to my McGonigals,so far none,in Scotland anyway !.
