Louhna There is no mention of wife or children in his VC citation or memorial: Lieutenant Hector Lachlan Stewart Maclean, VC - Guides Cavalry - killed in action at Landakai - 17th August 1897. Aged 26. Son of Major-General Charles Maclean, CB, CIE (Indian Staff Corps). Born 13th September 1870. Killed while trying to help Lieut. Robert Greaves. Posthumous VC awarded. Buried (sic) at Mardan* "Sacred to the memory of Lieutenant Hector L.S. MacLean. Adjutant 'Queen's Own' Corps of Guides Cavalry who fell mortally wounded, in action near Landakai, Swat, on the 17th August 1897 while gallantly endeavouring to rescue a Brother Officer. This monument is erected as a token of sincere regard and admiration by his Brother Officers of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers and the 'Queen's Own' Corps of Guides. MacLean's Cross." * The memorial at Marden is just that a memorial - he was buried in India. It's at St Albans Church, Marden, Kent His Gallanach line is also given in the book The Clan Gillean (Haszard and Moore, Charlottetown, 1899) - p421-3 but again no descendants are given, but they are not given for any of his siblings either - 3 sisters and 3 brothers. The death of his brother Donald Hugh is given in The Times, Thursday, Aug 09, 1951; pg. 1; Issue 52075; col A but I have not seen it to confirm - may mention him and/or his family. jay Dave and Louahna wrote: > Dear all > > I am wondering if anyone can tell me if Hector > Lachlan Stewart MacLean (1870 - 1897) had any children? Dear all I am wondering if anyone can tell me if Hector Lachlan Stewart MacLean (1870 - 1897) had any children? I am trying to find out if he is my great grandfather. For those who might be interested, here is a link to a photograph of my grandmother with her 4 sisters. I believe they may be the daughters of Hector Lachlan Stewart MacLean. I have also posted 2 other photos to that site, one of my father with my grandmother and one of my grandmother alone: http://profile.imageshack.us/user/louahnal/ And also, here is a link to Hector Lachlan Stewart MacLean's photo: http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/punjab_frontier_despatches/chitral_vc_victoria_cross.htm If anyone thinks they may be a descendant of Hector Lachlan Stewart MacLean, I'd be most grateful for any information you might be able to give me. At this stage, I'm just trying to work out if I am a descendant of the MacLeans or not. My grandmother's maiden name was not MacLean but I believe her mother remarried after Hector MacLean was killed in action and so it may be that she took on her step-father's name. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks all, Louahna
If anyone is interested in John McCormick, born around 1880 in Kilfinichen, I came across him in the 1901 census working as a gardener at Roseneath Castle along with my great uncle, Donald McPherson from Bunessan. Roseneath Castle, which I think has now been demolished, belonged to the Duke of Argyll at the time. Stuart McColl
Greetings from Western Australia fellow listers, First, my apologies for the delay in getting back to the list. Work pressures, etc. Second, thanks to all those who replied to my original question including Ida, John and Joanne among others. Finally, please find below more details on my Neil Fletcher as requested: Neil FLETCHER born about 1800 (not in Banffshire -1841 Census), died between 1841-1844. 1832 - sailor in Macduff. 1835 - seaman in Macduff. 1837 - Merchant in Macduff. 1838 - Merchant in Macduff. 1840 grocer in Macduff. 1841 census, Gamrie, Banffshire, age 40, merchant and Sp. Dealer, living at Duff St, Gamrie. Neil Married Janet BLACK in 1832 in Macduff, Gamrie, Banffshire. Their children were: 1 M John Rainey FLETCHER Born: 10 Oct 1832 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff 2 George FLETCHER Born: 23 Aug 1835 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff, Christened: 10 Oct 1835 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff, 3 Alexander FLETCHER Born: 10 Nov 1837 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff, Christened: 8 Dec 1837 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff, Died: 13 Nov 1914 - C. Hill, Vic, Aus Spouse: Catherine Reid McGEE (1850-1915) Marr. Date: 3 Sep 1870 - Nelson, New Zealand 4 Mary FLETCHER Born: 2 Dec 1838 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff, Christened: 21 Dec 1838 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff, 5 Amelia FLETCHER Born: 24 Jul 1840 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff, Christened: 25 Aug 1840 - Macduff, Gamrie, Banff, Janet BLACK married for the second time in Macduff in 1844 to Donald McDonald who is not from Banffshire. I am not sure when Neil died as the death records and mort cloth records are mostly non existant. I am not sure what happened to 4 of Neil and Janet's children: John Rainey, George, Mary and Amelia. I assume they died before 1851. I found Janet and her son, Alexander, on the 1851 Census in Aberdeen. Her husband was not at home. In 1861 all 3 were home in Aberdeen, Donald and Janet McDonald and Alexander Fletcher. Alexander Fletcher arrived in New Zealand in Oct 1861 with his mother and step father. His mother died in 1868 and I was privileged to see the tombstone Alexander erected for her in Nelson, New Zealand. Alexander married in Nelson in 1870 and moved to Melbourne, Victoria. I hope this long saga strikes a chord with someone out there and I look forward to any responses. Thanks again to everyone. Greetings All, I am a little stuck with my McNIVEN ancestors! I am hoping that someone may be able to point me in the right direction. I am really hoping to find which family Archibald McNIVEN is connected to (and therefore his siblings) and the name of his mother. The clues I have: My gr.gr.gr grandfather was Archibald McNIVEN who departed Scotland from Tobermory, Mull on 27 September 1837, aboard the vessel "Brilliant". The following information is from NSW Bounty Immigration Index 1828-1842 CD: Surname: McNIVEN Given Names: Archibald Age: 21 Year: 1838 Ship: Brilliant Native Place: Argyleshire, Scotland Occupation: Smiths Apprentice Religion: Church of Scotland Notes: Son of Dond & Sally McNiven. Appr. Hugh McMaster Reel: 1288 I have recently obtained a copy of Archibald's death certificate. This certificate notes his father as Donald, mother as "unknown" and where born as "Scotland". Archibald McNIVEN (above) married Janet STEWART in Paterson, NSW in 1842. Their children were: DONALD b. 15 September 1843. MARGARET b. 21 September 1846 HUGH b. 15 April 1849 JOHN b. 31 October 1851 JANET b. 13 August 1854. ISABELLA b. 25 July 1857 SARAH b. 6 March 1861 ALEXANDER STEWART McNIVEN b. 19 July 1867. Based on what I know of the naming rules often applied to children of this era, Donald would fit as Archibald's father, I know Margaret and Hugh to be the parents of Janet..The Sally noted above I am guessing is a diminutive of perhaps either Sarah or Marion... I am curious also that, while born in Argyllshire, Archibald McNIVEN and Hugh McMASTER (and his family) joined a group of 318 Highlanders aboard the vessel that brought them to Sydney. I am really hoping to find Archibald's family! It would be good to know where they all went..or whether the remainder stayed in Scotland. Thank you in advance for all advice about this group! Regards, Laura Roemkens NSW, Australia
Hi Jane McKeown Jane a while back you were searching for your Henderson's Just ran across a couple rather interesting items in the IGI. I was wondering if you have any thoughts to add. Hopefully you can follow this. You previously mentioned parents John Henderson and Mary McKinnon had a daughter Catherine in 1845 I came an enrty for Catherine chrst Jun 19 1845 in Tobermory C115492, 0531she's listed as the daughter of John & Mary McKillop. I'm wondering if the transcriber mistook McKillop for McKinnon, :-) As this is the only entry for this couple it makes me wonder. you wrote: John and Mary's children appear to be Archibald b 1832 Margaret b 1834 who had illegimate John who is with grandparents in 1861 (don't know what became of Margaret or John). Just to confuse the issue a bit more. I came across an entry for John Jan 23 1856 with only Margaret listed as the parent C115491, 0041 TBR ok for this one. However I came across another entry for an Alexander Nov 22 1862 again with only Margaret listed as the parent C115491, 0348 TBR I think I found Alexander in 1871 North High Street Henderson Angus 61 Head Retired Sailor Tobermory Argyll 1 Mar 1841 High St. TBR, 1851 Mckenzie St. TBR 1861 Livingston house TBR North High Street Henderson Margaret 61 Wife Tobermory Argyll 1 Mar Liivingston North High Street Henderson Eliza 23 Dau Tobermory Argyll 1 UnMar North High Street Henderson Alexander 8 g- son Scholar Tobermory Argyll 1 Nov 22 1862 s/o Margaret Henderson So this Angus Henderson who m's Margaret Livingston has; Alexander Sep 22 1833 Mary Feb 16 1836 Dugald Sep 11 1838 John abt 1843 Margaret Apr 9 1844 Janet Elizabeth Feb 15 1847 Then I came across an enty for Margaret Henderson who m's Archibald Henderson Sep 29 1864 TBR M115491, 0078 looks like this couple chose not to have children. ;-) I haven't worked out who their parents were. 1871 TBR Breast Henderson Archibald 36 Head *ruitor Argyll Tobermory Breast Henderson Margaret 37 Wife Dressmaker Argyll Tobermory 1881 TBR Shore Street Henderson Archibald 42 Head Merchant Tobermory, Argyll, Scotland Shore Street Henderson Margaret 43 Wife Merchants Wife Tobermory, Argyll, Scotland Wew! thats it. I have been reading the information about the family McDonald with some comments by Ida and by Jim. My great great grandfather was Archibald McMillan and on his birth certificate in Portland Australia it states that his parents were Archibald McMillan and Christina McCormick. On his wife's (Flora McIntyre) death certificate, also in Australia, it cites her parents as being Angus McIntyre and Christina McCormick. Someone in the family has suggested that the parents of Archibald were in fact Archibald McMillan and Christina McDonald. Archibald and Flora McMillan (nee McIntyre) came to Portland Victoria Australia in 1853 in the New Zealander (underthe HIES). I am wondering if anyone has a link to this couple. Regards to all, Libby McMillan (Ongoing email: libbymcm@tpg.com.au)

I would like to thank Ian Phillips, Tricia Barnett, Michael Ford and Jill Dakin for all of the assistance they have given me in my research of these families. Thanks to them I have managed to break down a some of my brickwalls. They have also given me ideas on how to try and break down the remaining brickwalls. Without joining the Mull List and their help I would not have been able to research these families any further.
