    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] introduction--Beaton, MacDonald
    2. Hello, Folks, I joined the list about two weeks ago, but I have just been sitting quietly. It is about time I introduce myself. I am Jean and I live in Idaho. I am helping a dear friend, Jan, with her research. She says that her best friend was her mother-in-law, who came from the Isle of Mull. The woman was Annie Beaton, who was born 29 March, 1887. Her father was John Beaton. Her mother died when Annie was very young. She went to live at her grandfather's house and grew up there. He was John MacDonald, born 1823. When she was an adult, Annie came to work in Canada as a housekeeper. In 1914, she married an American, Estelle Donley. They lived in America and raised several children. Annie died in Idaho in 1982. Jan and I would enjoy hearing from anyone who is related to these people or who is tracing Beaton or MacDonald people. Jean searcher3@mindspring.com Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

    3. My copy of 'The Macleans of Boreray' contains around 180 pages (printed half-quarto). It has a 'useful' index -males only - some knowledge of the family branches is helpful. 3. Robyn The Macleans of Boreray does have an index of sorts, though not particularly helpful from memory. It has been out of print for many years. However, if you have not already tried it, the database here : http://www.maclean.org/genealogy/index.php, I believe holds much of the data and possible family links for you. You need to register, but it is free. If you do not have any luck, let me know and I will check if I have the full copy in my records (senior moment - know I have a least part) j Peter & Robyn MacIntosh wrote: > Our family has a long connection to Boreray and North Uist. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Could someone explain this term
    2. DONALD MACKECHNIE
    3. Hello all listers, in looking through the 1851 census reports for my family in Torrans, Kilfinichen, I came across a term on the report which I need help with, on some of the families listed some of them are listed as INMATES, what does this mean, is it just that they lived on a farm and this is the term that was used. Also I am still looking for my brick wall Allan McEachern, I have nothing for him after 1861, no death record, if he emigrated, where can i find a list of ships that the people of Mull would have left on. Thanks

    3. Jean, This is interesting, but I don't think it is the Capt. Duncan Campbell that married Isabel MacLean in 1822. >From what I have been able to piece together on the Duncan Campbell that Alison is referring to (at least I think it is the same family) is: Duncan Campbell, christened 23 April 1777 Kilninian, Argyll, Scotland, son of Archibald Campbell and Isobel Campbell. No other information on the parents. This Duncan Campbell married 1st an Isabel Campbell (no further information on her) and they had a daughter, Janet Campbell, christened 12 February 1797, Kilninian, Argyll, Scotland. This Duncan Campbell married 2nd, 23 March 1798 Kilninian, Argyll, Scotland, Grizell Campbell (no further information on her). Have not come across a marriage record for Janet Campbell (ch 2/12/1797) to Archibald Cameron, but did find their daughter Catherine Cameron, christened 14 December 1823, Salen, Isle of Mull, Scotland. (Also a son, Donald Cameron, christened 12 June 1822 Tobermory, Argyll, Scotland). Catherine Cameron (ch 12/14/1823) may have actually been born 16 November 1823 Kilninian, Argyll, Scotland. I did find a Janet Cameron, daughter of Archibald Cameron and Janet Campbell, born (or christened) 7 November 1831 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, who married, 18 June 1854 Barony, Lanark, Scotland, a William "Jardan" (perhaps this should have read "Jordan") Have not been able to match this particular family with any of the MacLean/McLean data that I have, so would be very interested if you are able to do so. Have a great trip to Mull!!! 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] MacLean, MacQueen and MacIntosh family connections
    2. Peter & Robyn MacIntosh
    3. Our family has a long connection to Boreray and North Uist. Our paternal line goes back to Donald MacIntosh who married Isabella MacDonald circa 1785. Their daughter, Catherine, married Roderick MacLean, who was also from Boreray. A son, Angus, married Mary MacLean circa 1820. Our direct line is through Angus and Mary. Angus and Mary's daughter, Kirsty, married Donald MacQueen circa 1866, hence the MacQueen connection. I was wondering if anyone had any connection or information re these people? Can you tell me is the book THE MACLEANS OF BORERAY a very large book? Does it have a user-friendly index? Cheers Robyn MacIntosh

    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] my ancestors from Mull
    2. Alison Round
    3. for your info: My 4xG grandfather was Duncan Campbell baptised on Mull Treshnish April 1777 . His parents were Isobel ? (b 1760) and Archibald Campbell who married in 1777. The daughter of Duncan's first marriage was Jessie/Janet . I don't yet know the name of his first wife, who probably died soon after Jessie's birth. His second wife was Grizel ?? whom he married in March 1798 and they had 8 more children.. Janet/Jessie Campbell (bapt Feb 1797) married Archibald Cameron (b c1790 Morvern )in ( unknown year?? )and their first daughter Catherine was born on Mull baptised 14 Dec 1823 Kilninian. By 1831 they had moved to Glasgow as their daughter Janet/Jessie was born there November 1831 . This Janet/Jessie met her husband William Jordan in Glasgow ( he was a mariner from Kent/Cornwall) and they married in G in 1854. They are listed in Glasgow in the 1861 census, but by 1871 were living in Cornwall, where my great grandfather William Jordan was born in 1864.. and he too became a mariner. I do not know where the Campbells lived on Mull; I found a listing on the mullgenaeology website, after my sister had found the marriage record for Jessie/Janet with her maiden name Campbell. I have now had an email from someone in Australia who is also a descendant of this Archibald ( her 4 x G grandparents .. ) and I feel fairly certain our families are related ! As my Janet Campbell was a half sister of the rest of her father's children with 2nd wife Grizel and had a step mother, that might account for her willingness to leave Mull with her Cameron husband ...??!! They then appear on censuses in Glasgow from 1841. best wishes Alison

    3. Hello Mary Fletcher Harris, It is reported that my ggggrandfather Neil McColl (?- 4 MAR 1861) and his wife Mary McPherson McColl emigrated from The Isle of Mull to Canada in 1821 sometime after 12 MAY bringing with them my gggreatgrandfather John (15 AUG 1815-16 JUN 1891). They resided near Tobermory at Ardmore in the parish of Kilninian on Mull and ended their journey at Glengary, Stormont county near Ottawa Canada. At some time their name changed from McColl To McCall. Could you be so kind as to check your book of passenger and ship listings for that period to see if they are among those named? I would greatly appreciate having that knowledge if it is available. Thank you from Fred Davidson

I can't see them on modern maps, but maybe someone has access to early maps - I'm thinking more of estate plans etc that may list small settlements? Thanks for any help, Janet
