Dear list, I am new to researching Scottish ancestry and wonder if anyone may be able to help me. My gg grandfather was ROBERT SEATON who was born ca 1829 in Argyll, Scotland. Robert came to Victoria, Australia and married Sarah Elford in 1863. According to his Victorian marriage certificate his parents were ROBERT SEATON and SARAH McQUARRIE. I recently posted a message on the Argyll mailing list and was fortunate to receive a reply from another very helpful lister. The information he has passed to me would suggest that the family I am looking for may in fact be ROBERT SEATON or SETTON or SETON Died before 1841 and MARRION (MARION) McQUARRIE Born ca 1796, Iona, Isle of Mull, Scotland ROBERT and MARRION married 1819 in Ardtun, Isle of Mull. They had the following children:- John SEATON born ca 1821 Malcolm SEATON born ca 1825 Margaret SEATON born ca 1827 Mary SEATON born ca 1828 Robert SEATON born ca 1832 Does anyone out there have further information on this family or knowledge of other possible SEATON family? Good morning Lee, Welcome to the list. >>As far as I know they had 7 children, all daughters. Their daughter Isabella is my 3x grandmother. I have details of only 6 children (Rachel, Catherine, Hester, Isabel, Margaret, and Flora) so would be interested to learn of the missing child. >> I have both their death entries from Scotlandspeople (where I blew a bundle, by the way). I would be interested to learn of whatever detail you have so that I can added to that already on the MullGenealogy website. Good Morning Ian (a.m in Texas anyway) Re: 6 versus 7 daughters. The 6 may be right. My ancestor, Isabella, went to Glasgow and all documents (census & death) seem to indicate that she was born around 1821. Since I found all the other children in the OPR and not Isabella in 1821 (one born in 1810) I now have to determine if she misstated her age by 10 years. I have a day trip planned with my granddaughter today, but when I have the time I will scan the documents from scotlandspeople and send them to you. I really appreciate the Mull web site. Thanks for what you do to keep it informative. Ian Phillips <ian.phillips@ukonline.co.uk> wrote: Good morning Lee, Welcome to the list. >>As far as I know they had 7 children, all daughters. Good Morning, I am new to the list and thought I would share the names that I am researching. Colin McKillop my 4X grandfather was born about 1775 on Iona. On 23 Jan 1806 he married Margaret McEachern (B: abt 1776 Iona) I have both of them in the 1851 census, but neither shows up in the statutory death records so I am assuming that they both died between 1851-1855. As far as I know they had 7 children, all daughters. Their daughter Isabella is my 3x grandmother. Their oldest daughter, Rachel, married Archibald Campbell on 19 Mar 1831 and as far as I know they had 8 kids. I have both their death entries from Scotlandspeople (where I blew a bundle, by the way). I hope this sounds familiar to someone. Hi Christine I'm also sending this reply through to the list in case Ian has another suggestion. I wonder if you'd mind cc'ing either Ian or myself when you send information to the individuals. As we could forward a copy to the general list where the information will be placed in the Archives as well.. Hi All, Just back from the Gathering which turned out to be a busy and interesting week. I have to record with thanks the warm welcome that I was given. Not having an Maclean ancestors, I was made an honorary Maclean to attend the event. Together with fellow list member Jean Whimp from Australia we answered genealogy questions from the 600 attendees. A few more than attended MUGG last year. A blog was maintained by Maclean.org for the event to allow those not able to attend in person, to keep up to date on what was happing on Mull. Jean and I got to feature on the blog. For those interested you can see us taking to an attendee at :- http://www.maclean.org/nucleus/index.php?itemid=6#more You might even see me sitting under the Tobermory clock enjoying a meal from the world famous fish and chip shop. That's me next to the dog. At nine p.m. on the Wednesday evening Jean and I presented a talk on 'Researching your family tree'. Even at this late hour over 70 individuals attended. See http://www.maclean.org/nucleus/index.php?itemid=7#more for more pictures. Between us we manged to bring together two sets of two attendees who shared a common ancestors from the 1700's. The exact relationships have yet to be established. Two of the attendee took the opportunity of their visit to get married in Duart Castle. We were promised a broadband connection in order to help answer queries. This turned out to be a very weak wireless link to the shop (The Gallery). Owing to the thick stone walls of both buildings it proved to be unusable in the Aros Hall. Got some strange looks from folk whilst I stood outside the Hall trying to receive emails. Sending emails proved to be near impossible. After the event I was invited to stay on for a few days with another list member (Christine Leach of Pennygheal in the Past) . This proved to be a good move on a number of accounts. First I think it would have been a little dangerous for me to drive home straight from the event and had I not stayed on I would have not got to spot my first otter (seen others but these were found by others). I also got to see a sea eagle chick being ringed. The chick was born on 2nd May and already weighed 5 kilos. Some baby. Must away as a mountain of washing, ironing and emails await. Ian

Hello everyone, in May I had a lovely week on the Ross of Mull, I stayed at Scoor and highly recommend it, I wanted to spend a lot of quiet time at Shiaba, I have posted some photos on my blog if anyone is interested, shiaba http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/islandblogging/blogs/005253/0000009796.shtml there are some links in the right-hand side bar to a couple of other places, the rest of the posts are quilts from the Loch Lomond Quilt Show (LLQS), I don't know if anyone would be interested so just in case here is a link to the mountainman's blog, mountainman http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/islandblogging/blogs/000017/ it is a blog by a Geologist living on Mull but James likes walking and throws in some scenic photos too, I have found it very interesting learning about the rocks, if you want just general blethering from the Scottish islands then take this link to the page that shows all the blogs, http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/islandblogging/blogs enjoy, best thoughts FrancES Frances Caple Isle of Lewis, Scotland http://www.francescaple.com http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/islandblogging/blogs/005253/
As far as I am aware the Ross of Mull is the long narrow peninsula in the south western corner of the Island. The island of Iona is located off the tip of the peninsula. Malcolm McCormick, Ashburton, NZ
hello All, I am just letting everyone know that I will be taking myself off line as I am about to cancel my Primus Account before travelling overseas. I will be away for 'hopefully' six months. When I return next year having retired I will have a lot more time to spend with my Genealogical research. If anyone is researching McGilvrays or McIntyres, both Ida and Ian have my new address but I will be leaving my spreadsheets at home in a box. I have applied for and been accepted by the English National Trust as a volunteer Gardener at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire for six months after travelling through USA and visiting friends in Toronto and UK. I will also be visiting LONG LOST relatives in USA who were my Brick wall for 35 years - so for all of you out there who despair of ever crunching those walls down - sometimes miracles do happen. NEVER GIVE UP. Kind regards Jan Peasnell/Sydney/OZ (No it doesn't snow here - just feels like it)
Hello, June, Jill, Mary and other new friends, Wow, June, John McDonald is a great grandfather to you1 And he is also a great grandfather to Jan's husband, Doug Donley. This makes you and Doug second cousins. I think Jan and Doug will be fascinated to know that. Which of John McDonald's offspring do you descend from? Thank you for the information that you have sent. One thing confuses me very much. Are you sure that the death date of Annie's mother is correct? Could it possibly be 1888, instead of 1898? I suppose the first wife didn't die and then he immediately married another Annie? Little Annie was living with her grandparents when she was only 4 years old. Possible, of course, but not what I would have expected. Jill, June and Mary, you have brought up some other family groups which are good finds. I think that they must be related. And I think that we will figure out how. Jill, I think it would be a good chance that the Alexander Beaton you mention is John Beaton's father and Annie's paternal grandfather. Annie told Jan that she had a half sibling or step sibling (or just a sibling?) who accidentally hung himself or herself while playing in the barn. Does anyone here know anything about that? Another question, all. What is "the Ross of Mull"? That is a term I am not familiar with. Unfortunately, I won't see Jan this week, but I'll see her the Wednesday after. I am anxious to show her the new treasures. In friendship, Jean searcher3@mindspring.com Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.
