    3. For the List I've just had my attention drawn to Thomson's Atlas of Scotland, (1832) which has on it many names of settlements now lost in the mists of time. It really is a brilliant map ... why I'd forgotten it, I just don't know It can be found at The National Library of Scotland _ www.nls.uk/maps/early/506.html _This should take you straight to the page you want. Once you've found Mull, home in on the area you're interested in .... and you'll find "Cregmouichuil" on the Glen More road, north-east of Torbrake. If this really is the one mentioned in the 1841 census, nowadays it is known just as Craig - the rest of the name being lost. I'm still going to go back to the river bend beyond Derrynacullen though....you never know.... Christine

As I believe I said at one of our meets I love Mull and, if my wife would let me, we'd move over at the drop of a hat and it's only because of this that it's not my area. 3. Dear Ian, Would you be kind enough to send this through to the List for me please. To Les Horn I am most interested in your pinpointing the position of the settlement of Cugymony choull (or Cregymonyshoill) Looking at the map ref. you provided, it's an area I walk on a fairly regular basis, and I know the bend in the river quite well ................but I've never seen any footings or other signs of previous habitation. Do you have any of your own (or others') photos of the area? and could you please help with the documentary evidence of this site. I can't wait to get the walking boots on and get down there again!! Looking at the name Tricia provided, I did wonder if the former settlement could be what is now Craig........but that is a good bit further on from Derrynaculen. True, it's on the same Old Road. What do you think? Christine Leach...Pennyghael in the Past Archive, Tiroran, Mull Ps Sorry list but even I have now managed to send a blank message.

    3. Ian I had a look at my transcription before I went on line last night and I'd written it quite clearly, but that doesn't mean that my reading of it was correct!! Would have to go back to LDS and order the film again to check from the film. Admittedly the writing sometimes was difficult to translate so I did the best I could - someone with easier access might have a look for us. Yes I wondered about the Strathcoil which Charles Maclean has as 684.308. He also spells it as Strathchale There is also Strath Ban 643.361 Jean -----Original Message----- From: Ian Phillips [mailto:ian.phillips@ukonline.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, 26 July 2007 6:09 PM To: jean whimp Subject: Cugymony choull Hi Jean, Just been checking the 1880 maps. The Strath you mention is shown as Strathcaol. Do you think that the Strath could be Strathcoil (MN 683 307) which is at the head of Loch Spelve at the junction of the A849 Craignure-Fionnphort with the road to Loch Buie? In that case Cugymony choull could be in Glen More. Have you still got access to the 1841 census records to check transcription? I have sent a copy of Family Tree Maker to Alasdair who now has it installed. Trust all is well with you . All the best, Ian

Jean identified the approximate location of Cugmony ok. It is not shown on maps after 1880 as by then it was a ruin. However it was located about 1/2 km north of Derrynacullen on the southern bank of the Culadoir River (GB Grid Ref NM 565 294). [It should be noted that although it appears in the Kilfinichen & Kilvickeon Census, along with Strath, Derrynacullen and Torbreck, it was/is actually in Torosay Parish. It was quite common to annexe remote parts of Parishes to an adjacent Parish where it was easier to Enumerate] Regards Les

    3. Hi Tricia, I can't find the name in Charles Macleans book but I have found the two places on either side of it in the census so arguably it is close to them. It is late at night so I'll just give you the grid and you can look it up in your atlas. Strath is 574.246 Cugymony choull should lie between these two Strath and Dornacullen Dornacullen is 565.292 Torbrek is 560.294 Jean whimp -----Original Message----- From: sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Tricia Barnett Sent: Wednesday, 25 July 2007 9:47 PM To: sct-isleofmull@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Mullgenealogy Update Hi Ian Thanks for all the hard work you have done on the website. 3. Hi Elaine, Thanks for email and congratulations. Only trouble is it makes me feel old. I understand that one advantage over children is that you can hand grandchildren over at the end of the day and have a good nights sleep. Trust that the 19th is a success. I'm sure it will be. Don't forget the photographs. Ian

    3. Hi Tom I received this reply direct QUOTE: Dear Tricia I am not a member of the forum so not sure if this email will work. Other than its diminutive Lachy you would have to go back to the medieval period where in Scottish Latin documents the name was Latinised as 'Rollandus', modern Roland, but I have never encountered that substitution used in more modern times. In Ireland on the other hand, apart from being 'anglicised' as Loughlin or Laughlin it has also been 'translated' as Laurence. Best wishes. K Tom. In your McQuarrie family do you have Catherine McQuarrie who died 1830 Craignure m Alexander McDougall 9 Jul 1776 Kilninian. Tricia

I have recently done just that and discover that a careful recheck of the fine details (checked by others originally) have lead me to discard some of the connections and sent me off in other directions altogether.
