Mr Bennion, I entered "Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine" in Google search and received approximately 179,000 sites. Could you please be more specific regarding the search site name and save me from alot of reading, etc. I am on a quest for more information for McColl's, McCall's, McPherson's and Campbells from the Ardmore and Tobermory areas of The Isle of Mull. Hi Barbara, The Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a British magazine printed between 1817 and, I believe ceased publication in 1980. It was founded by William Blackwood and was originally called the Edinburgh Monthly Magazine. The front cover's that I saw had - for editor/publisher - William Blackwood, Edinburgh and T. Cadell, Strand, London. And yes, they are available on line (isn't that wonderful!). If you just type in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in your search engine, several issues will appear. I just clicked on one of them and then you get the option to view all of them. The really nice part is you can search within the magazine by name - and most of them you can download for free. Happy hunting! Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Gurney" <blgurney@iinet.net.au> To: <sct-isleofmull@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 17, 2007 4:16 AM Subject: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] 1. Hi Jay, The Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a British magazine printed between 1817 and, I believe ceased publication in 1980. It was founded by William Blackwood and was originally called the Edinburgh Monthly Magazine. The front cover's that I saw had - for editor/publisher - William Blackwood, Edinburgh and T. Cadell, Strand, London. Continuing with B/D/M's found in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magagine: 1. Vol. V, April - September 1819, p. 372 - Marriages - 30 March 1819 - At London, Alexander Maclean, Esq., of Orange Hill, Jamaica, to Miss Baigrie, eldest daughter of MacKenzie Baigrie, Es., of the county of Edinburgh. p. 372* - Births - 14 May 1819 - At Ruchill (?), the lady of H. Maclean, younger of Coll, a daughter. 2. Vol. XII, July - December 1822, p. 519* - Deaths - 31 July 1822 - At Southend, Essex, Lt. Charles Norman Maclean, half-pay, 73rd Regiment, and sixth son of the late Lt.-Col. Maclean, Resident Governor of the Tower of London. 3. Vol. XX, July - December 1826, p. 524* - Births - 21 July 1826 - At Edinburgh, the lady of Hugh Maclean, Esq., younger of Coll, of a daughter. p. 525 - Deaths - 13 July 1826 - At Portobello, Capt. James Maclean, of the Argyllshire Regiment. 4. Vol. VII, April - September 1820, p. 344* - Deaths - 28 April 1820 - At Tunbridge Wells, Capt. George Allan Maclean, of the 97th Regiment, fourth son of the late Lt.-Col. Maclean, Tower of London. 5. Vol. XVIII, January - June, 1825, p. 638* - Marriages - 8 December 1821 - At Kingarrar, Island of Mull, Peter M'Arthur, Esq., Ardow, to Flora, daughter of the late John Maclean, Esq., of Langamull. 6. Vol. XXII, July - December 1827, p. 527* - Marriages - 25 January 1827 - At Drimnin House, Col. Macpherson, Esq., of the Hon. East India Company's service, to Alexandrina, eldest daughter of the late John Maclean, Esq., Boreray. p. 667* - Marriages - 8 September 1827 - At London, Donald Maclean, Esq., second son of Lt.-Gen. Sir Fitzroy Maclean, Bart., to Harriet, second daughter of Gen. Maitland. 7. Vol. XXIII, January - June 1828, p. 268* - Births - At Drumfin, the lady of Hugh Maclean, Esq., younger of Coll, of a son and heir. 8. Vol. II, No. VII, October 1817, p. 607 - Marriages - 19 January 1817 - At Glasgow, Mr. John Black, manufacturer, to Catherine, eldest daughter of Mr. Malcolm Maclean, calenderer. Then I came across a marriage in Vol. XI, January - June 1822, p. 499 which read - Lately - At Edinburgh, Allan George Field, Esq. to "Jessie", relict of the late John Maclean, Esq., of Carriacou. This got me a little curious, so I did some checking for Macleans in Carriacou and came across the following (which doesn't match with the date of the above volume, but I believe is the same family). Would love to know if anyone on the list can connect to this family. John MacLean was a notable plantation owner in Grenada and Carriacou and posessed five estates among the islands. He married, in 1812, Janet Urquhart, and upon his death in 1825, his family became the wards of his brother, George MacLean. It was noted, in 1833, that the family owned 3,200 of Carriacou's 4,000 slaves. John and Janet had at least two daughters, Joanna and Dorothea. In a dissertation concerning the Chiefship Issue in the Clan MacRae, by Peter MacRae, London (1999), I found the following concerning Joanna - "The Petition of Sir Colin George Macrae, Knight Bachelor, Writer to the Signet, residing at 45 Moray Place, Edinburgh, Humbly Sheweth: that the Petitioner is the second but eldest surviving son of the late John Anthony Macrae of Wellbank in the County of Forfar, Doctor of Laws, Writer to the Signet, and his wife Joanna Isabella, youngest daughter of John Maclean, Dunfries (?) Estate, Carriacou, Grenada, West Indies." Have a little more information on this family, but have not been able to link back to Mull. Regards, Linda Bennion

John McLean was older than the entry in the 1877 Register of Deaths suggests. The Coll OPR gives his baptismal date as November 9, 1794. His wife Flora McKinnon was more than 98 years old when she died at the Industrial School, Tobermory in November 1895. Lachlan McLean, a son of John McLean and Flora McKinnon, also died at the Industrial School in 1894. Can anyone say what the connection between that Institution and the McLean family might have been? Donald Maclean.
Ellen Sturgeon says ' Still looking for info of my g-grandfather's parents, Catherine McKinnon, & Daniel Alexander McNair. ...... There is no record of a marriage between Catherine & Daniel Alexander. ' The fact that there is no record of a marriage does not necessarily mean that they were not legally married. Many legal marriages in Scotland took place in the house of a relative (up until around 1929 I think) so are not recorded in the OPRs. However I imagine they would be recorded on the Civil Indexes. You also need to consider, as well as illegitimacy, death of a spouse, male or female which was common at quite young ages. Also poverty led to many children brougt up by grandparents or other relatives to ease the burden .. remember these were the times of the 'Clearances' and social disruption. Anne Maye.
Hi Donald, Good to hear from you. Trust all is well with you. Many thanks for all the updates / corrections. I have applied the changes to my local database that I will upload to the web sometime before my next trip to Mull on the 1st September. There are just to many John McLean's. I have a feeling that if there are many more found my server will not cope. On a slow connection I'm pretty certain that it could already be timing out. I had the pleasure of meeting Nicholas Maclean-Bristol at the recent Clan Maclean gathering and had a quick look at his new book. For those, like yourself, with Coll connections it much be a tremendous asset and well worth the money. Thanks again for your contributions. Back now to the Mull OPR's. Ian
Hello Ian, I am recently back from Mull and Coll and as a result from my visit I can correct some 'information' on the Mull Genealogy website. It is suggested there that John McLean b. Jan 1800 on Coll who married Flora McKinnon (b or bap 10 Mar 1806) on 3 May 1825 on Coll, and who subsequently moved to Mull and farmed at Drumfin, Tobermory, had parents Neil McLean (b. or bap. 25 Aug 1779, Kilninnian) and Margaret McInnies (b or bap abt 1780). First, two Johns are being confused. The John who married Flora McKinnon (who was my g-g-grandfather) was not the John born Jan 1800. He was in fact born abt 1797. This date is calculated from his death register entry which I now have. It of course also gives the names of his parents. He was born on Coll, not to Neil and Margaret, but to Donald McLean and Ann McLean. John died at Drumfin 27 Aug 1877 and was buried at Crossapol Graveyard on Coll. John's grandfather was Neil who came from Rum. So guess where my next visit will be! A further useful piece of information is that John's daughter Flora (b. 23 Mar 1839) married Alexander McGregor who was the Inspector of the Poor on Coll who moved to the same job in Bunessan. Their eldest son John married his first cousin (my great aunt) Julia Ann McLean. They married 26 Mar 1904 in the Mishnish Hotel, Tobermory. If anyone has purchased Nicholas Maclean-Bristol's new book, 'From Clan to Regiment', my John is the 'Iain Saor' on the Auchnasaul Genealogical Chart on page 687. You will realize that this book for me was £45 well spent! It takes me back many generations. This was my first visit to Coll - not of course as fine as Mull, but well worth a visit. Donald McIlhagga.
Hi everybody, Still looking for info of my g-grandfather's parents, Catherine McKinnon, & Daniel Alexander McNair. Catherine was the daughter of Charles McKinnon, & Rachel Beaton of Lee. Born September 22nd 1822. We now wonder if g-grandfather James McNair was born out of wedlock. He was brought up by his McKinnon grandparents. There is no record of a marriage between Catherine & Daniel Alexander. My cousin was told that Catherine married a Kenneth Kennedy who was also from Mull. She at least had two sons. They moved to Old Kilpatrick which is on the lower part of the river Clyde. Kenneth Kennedy worked as a bridge keeper on the Forth & Clyde Canal. This is all we know about Kenneth Kennedy. Has anyone information re this Kennedy family on Mull? All the best, Ellen.
> Barbara Thanks for the information. I will check out this lead. Interesting as his wife was Mary Ann (Marian) McKean. I am not sure when they were married. There has been some mixed information in Australia about the son of Archibald and Flora McMillan (nee McIntyre), Angus. Angus' parents left Oskamull and went to Portland, Victoria Australia in 1853 on the New Zealander. Their son Angus was reported to have left for Victoria before them and I have now obtained his death certificate and have confirmed which of the two possible Angus McMillans was the one related our family. Daryl from the Ballarat Genealogical Society has provided me with the following. I am wondering if anyone knows on which ship Angus may have travelled to Australia, given that it seems from his death certificate that he came in abt 1841. Angus' son John McMillan was the informant at his death. Hi James & Sandford James I'm sorry your posting came through as a blank. Seems like hotmail and a few other servers are not sending messages through to our list... Please check with hotmail and see why this is happening... :-[ Sandford. As Ian's suggested all the places to see while at the Ross. Our Ian keep forgetting to warn everyone about the roads and how one should manuver about the island. That in itself is quite an interesting situation. Most of the highways are two lanes with narrow shoulders.. BUT when your traveling the highways sooner or later you'll end up in one lane traffic with a narrow pullout on the side of the road. These are marked with white poles and black stripes at the top. If you see one of these pullouts on your side of the road and traffic is coming at you .. Pull over and let the traffic pass :-[ Although the island looks quite small it really does takes time to get from one place to another on the island. If at all possible extend your stay on Mull. The sight of Duart Castle will bring a tear to your eye both coming and going. Just tell your travel mate it's the sea air. :-( Enjoy Mull and your holiday Ida Jim McCormick wrote: > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SCT-ISLEOFMULL-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
Hi Sandford, What a difficult question you pose. When you say that you have only one day there I wonder just how much time you really have to explore. If you are traveling over from Oban and have to return there the same day, you are going to have far less time than if you are already staying on the island. Equally a great deal will depend on whether you have your own transport or will be dependent on public transport. If you be reliant on public transport you can be dropped at Bunessan but the next bus to Creich or Fionnport will not be for another two hours. In this case I would recommend that you use the services of the local taxi / guide service (Mull and Iona Taxi - http://www.mullionataxi.com/). I'm sure David will be able to get you to all the places that you would like to in the shortest possible time. In Bunessan you have the churches (Church of Scotland and Baptist) and the Ross of Mull Historical Centre. Just outside you have Suie burial ground and the ruins of the old village of Suie. Check out http://www.bunessan.bordernet.co.uk/ Next ago the road towards Fionnphort comes Creich which is 1.3 miles off the 'main' road. No public transport goes to Creich. There are a the ruins of old croft houses in the area. Close to the road junction there is the old school which is now the community centre and the ruins of the old blacksmiths. A quarter mile further down the road there is St Ernan's Church (Church of Scotland). If you get to Creich, I would suggest that you continue on to the little gem of Kintra. Then on to Fionnphort with its burial ground. Check http://www.mull.zynet.co.uk/accommodation/fionnphort.htm If you get the chance I would suggest that you get a copy of 'Discover the Ross' produced by the Ross of Mull Historical Centre (£12 plus postage). Sorry no ISBN. This is a detailed informative guide to the whole area and will help you determine how best to fill your day. It is available from local (Mull/Oban) bookshops (and I think on the ferry) and by post from the Centre on www.rohmc.org.uk. However I have just checked this website and its offline. Hope this helps. Enjoy your day. Ian
Dear Friends, My wife and I will be in Scotland later this month and will be in Mull on Friday, 24 August. We plan to wander all around the Ross, to Creich, where my g-g-g grandfather Donald McLean (born 1786) and the areas around Bunnesan and Fionnphort. This will be my first vist to Mull. As we only have one day there, what should we see? What should I be looking for? Are there ruins around Creich of old croft houses? Graveyards? I value your suggestions! Best Regards, Sandford MacLean
Hi from NZ. There is a family story that one of my distant relatives married into a family that had two castles, one of them on Mull. Does anyone know where to find out who has lived in/owned the castles on Mull in the last 100 years or so, so I can see how true the story might be? Best Wishes Duncan Duncan & Pam McMillan
Hi all, Just wondered if anyone has ever been to the old village of Ardchiavaig? My family originate from there and I would like to see it when we go to Mull in a few weeks time. Most maps show it as being at the end of the road, just past Uisken, but I have seen a photo of the ruined houses there, and it doesn't look as if there is a road any where near them. My husband, bless him, likes to have a wheel at each corner and walking miles looking for a pile of old stones when he could be doing something really interesting, like fishing!!!, might be asking too much.
