    3. Hi Jay, Thanks - made the match. Found the following today and didn't know if you had it: From: British History Online: Members of Parliament for Cardiff Sponsor: Institute of Historical Research; Publication: Cardiff Records: volume 5; Year published: 1905; Supporting documents: Glossary Pages: 482-507: James Mackenzie Maclean was born 13 August 1835, the youngest son of Alexander Maclean, of Liberton, Edinburgh, and married in 1867 Anna Maria, daughter of Philip Whitehead. Residing in India as a journalist, he was editor and proprietor of the Bombay Gazette for several years, was elected a Fellow of Bombay University, and was sometime Chairman of the Bombay Town Council. He is author of Maclean's "Guide to Bombay," and of numerous essays on Indian subjects. On his return home he unsuccessfully contested the Elgin Burghs 1880, but sat for Oldham 1885-92, when he was defeated. Mr. Maclean, who is one of the proprietors of the Western Mail, has been the Member for Cardiff since 1895. From: 'Members of Parliament for Cardiff', Cardiff Records: volume 5 (1905), pp. 482-507. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=48212. Date accessed: 23 August 2007. Also found his obituary in the Annual Register For the Year 1906 (actually published in 1907). Thanks sooooo much for your help! 3. Edwin, Thanks so much for your comments. I'm still checking on the second (7 December 1820) reference, but wanted to share comments on the first (8 July 1829) reference. Note for Sibella Maclean (daughter of Sir Allan MacLean & Una Maclean), wife of John MacLean, of Inverscadale: (I have Sibella born about 1756, died 18 Nov. 1839 - based on the following): >From the Seneachie, p. 229: Sibella, a lady of high accomplishments, now {In 1838} residing near Cheltenham. She was married to John Maclean of Inverscadell, by whom she had issue a son and a daughter. >From Clan Gillean,p. 470: Sibella was married to John Maclean of Inverscadale. >From A History of the Clan MacLean, p. 227: Sibella married John MacLean of Inverscadell, by whom she had a son and daughter. From: MacLeans - A Biographical Dictionary of Mull People Mainly in the 18th and 19th Centuries, compiled by Jo Currie, p. 64-65: Sibella MacLean (c. 1753 - ?) dau. of Sir Allan Maclean (q.v.) & Una Maclean of Coll, m. 1779 John Maclean of Inverscadale and was only ch. of Sir Allan to have ch. - 1 son unmarried and 1 dau., Mary Ann, who m. Dr. MacKenzie Grieve, from whom any claimants of relationship must descend. >From Burke's Landed Gentry of Scotland, p. 932: Sibella m. John Maclean, of Inverscadell. From: The Gentleman's Magazine, Vol. XII, July to December 1839, p. 644 - Deaths: November 18 - At Cheltenham, in her 83rd year, Mrs. Maclean, relict of John Maclean, esq., and eldest surviving daughter of the late Sir Allan Maclean, Bart. Note for Mary Ann Maclean, daughter of Sibella & John, wife of Dr. MacKenzie-Grieve: >From the Seneachie: Mary Anna, who married Dr. MacKenzie Grieve, by whom she had two sons and one daughter. Her son, John MacLean Mackenzie Grieve is proprietor of Hutton Hall, Berwickshire. >From Clan Gillean: Mary Ann was married to Dr. Mackenzie Grieve. >From A History of the Clan MacLean, p. 279: Mary Anna married Doctor MacKenzie Grieve. Do not know if this is the same "Mackenzie Grieve" as I did not have his name as "Andrew Mackenzie Grieve: Note for Dr. Andrew Mackenzie Grieve - based on the following, I would say that he died prior to Mar. 27, 1828: Extracted from The Barcaldine Papers - Papers of the Campbell Family of Barcaldine [National Archives of Scotland] 1539-1857 : 67 Papers relative to lands of Sallachan sold by Duncan Campbell of Barcaldine to Robert Downie of Appine and lands of Ellerich sold to Dr. Andrew McKenzie Grieve 1816-1819 68 Contract between John Grieve, accountant in Edinburgh, factor for trustees of deceased Dr. Andrew Mackenzie Grieve of Glenure and Duncan Campbell of Barcaldine, whereby said John dispones to said Duncan lands in parishes of Ardchattan, Appin and Lesmore which were formerly disponed by said Duncan to said Dr. Andrew Mackenzie Grieve 27 Mar 1828 And for the son of Mary Ann Maclean & "Mackenzie Grieve", John Maclean Mackenzie Grieve, I have him born about 1811, based on the following (which provides his date of death: >From The Seneachie: John MacLean MacKenzie Grieve is {in 1838} proprietor of Hutton Hall, Berwickshire. From: Annual Register for the Year 1891, p. 135 - Obituary (February) - On the 4th at Paris, aged 80, John Maclean Mackenzie Grieve, of Hutton Hall, Berwickshire, N.B. Entered the Guards, and was one of the officers of the day in the coronation of William IV. In 1840 he went to Paris on a visit, but from that time made it his home. Took an active part in racing matters, and was one of the Committee of the Jockey Club. And for Ann Maclean, daughter of Sir Allan MacLean & Una MacLean, and sister to Sibella Maclean, I have her born about 1757, died October 17, 1840, unmarried, based on the following: >From the Seneachie and Clan Gillean and A History of the Clan MacLean: Ann died unmarried. From: The Gentleman's Magazine, Vol. XIV, July - December 1840, p. 673: Death's - 17 October - At Bath, aged 83, Miss Maclean, daughter of the late Sir Allan Maclean, of Maclean, Bart. So, my question would be, if the "Dr. Andrew Mackenzie Grieve" referenced above is the correct husband of Mary Ann Maclean (daughter of Sibella & John), then I don't think he could be the same as the "Mr. Grieve" referenced in the 8 July 1829 death notice. Would you agree? If that being the case, could there have been another Grieve-Maclean marriage that we haven't come across yet? I would welcome comments on this. 2. Kate Price
    3. On board the Belmont, which sailed from Grennock to the Port of New York, arriving August 30, 1828, there are the following members of a McIntyre family: Mary, aged 30 Neal, aged 40 George, aged 15 At first, I thought that the Mary and Neal might perhaps be my missing Mary McCallum and Nicol McIntyre, but the age for Mary specifically, is quite off. I'm wondering then if perhaps Mary and Neal are a couple, and George is their son. Since they travelled on the same ship with my McIntyre family, I'm interested in this piece of the puzzle. Do these people mean anything to someone on the List? --------------------------------- All new Yahoo! 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] McIntyres Passenger List Found
    2. Kate Price
    3. Hello everyone. It's been quite a while since I've been in touch ... but pleased to share with you that this weekend, while referencing material at the National Archives in Ottawa, I have finally found ... after a 25-year search ... records of a passenger list verifying the 1928 voyage from Scotland to North America, of the Nicol McIntyre=Mary McCallum family of Ardalanish. The "Passenger Arrivals at the Port of New York, 1820-1829. From Customs Passenger Lists. Transcribed by Elizaberth P. Bentley, 1999", clearly notes that Flora, Catherine, Elizabeth, Archibald and Dougald McIntyre, children of Nicol McIntyre and Mary McCallum, sailed from Grennock on the Belmont, captained by Edward Paul, arriving at the Port of New York on August 30, 1828. These records indicate their intention was to reside in the United States. However it's known that in actual fact, by 1834, they were living in Canada, specifically in the Whitevale area of Ontario. Although Nicol, Mary and 2 other daughters, Ann and Rachel are not noted on these passenger lists, history records that Mary did indeed give birth to yet another daughter, Margaret, while at sea on that August voyage in 1828. Elizabeth Bentley indicates in her introduction, that there were several instances where either the entry was unreadable, or blotched, or feint. So I am now pursuing channels to view the original microfilm of the passenger lists, to ascertain if perhaps these 4 individuals might fall into any one of those categories ... as their names do not appear on any other passenger lists referenced to date. For those that may be new to this list, and interested in the McIntyre line specifically, I'll repost in a separate email, the vital statistics of these members of my family line. Regards, Kate. --------------------------------- Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people. Go to Yahoo! Answers.

    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] McIntyre connections in Mull (always hopeful)
    2. Elizabeth McMillan
    3. Good evening Kate (from Samoa) I read with interest your messages on the McINTYRE family. I am constantly looking for McINTYREs in and from Mull. Flora McINTYRE married Archibald McMILLAN and they lived in Oskamull. Their children were Ann, Angus, John, Alexander, Mary, Sarah (Marion) and Christy. John was my great grandfather and my father's name was Neil McIntyre McMillan. Archibald and Flora McMILLAN (nee McINTYRE) left Oskamull in 1853 and travelled to Portland Victoria Australia with Ann, John, Christy and Alexander. Their son, Angus McMILLAN was already in Victoria having travelled there in about 1841 (aged 18 years). The Victorian BDM (Registration number - 1870 & 6333) cites Flora's surname as being McMILLEN and being spouse of Archibald McMILLEN. It also has her mother as being Christina McCormack - the same name as the mother that is cited for her husband's mother on his death certificate. It states that her father was Angus McIntyre. It states that she was 89 at death which means that her birthdate would have been 1781. The McMILLEN spelling was one reason why her death record was so elusive. I do not have Archibald and Flora McMILLAN's marriage certificate, nor have I been able to confirm their actual birth days or their parents through any birth records. I have therefore not been able to find any McINTYRE connections for Flora in Mull - and any mention of McINTYRE in this list makes me hopeful. Do you think that there is any connection between your McIntyre family and this one? Regards Libby McMillan (ongoing email address libbymcm@tpg.com.au)

Sir FG Maclean, of Maclean, Bart, to Frances, widow of Henry Campion esq. of Malling Deanery" Debrett's gives Elizabeth's death in 1832 but I have not been able to confirm from any other source. So, did she die in 1832 and the above 1846 entry just a co-incidence or were Fitzroy and Elizabeth divorced and she also later remarried? jay

    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Stewart Family Information Needed
    2. Ben Tinck
    3. Good Day Everyone I am looking for my gr grandmother's brother's burial place. His name is Alexander Stewart. He lived north of Durham Ont. just a little north of the Rocky Community. In 1917 one of his son's named Donald sold their farm that was Lot 10 WGR in Bentinck Township. Donald was the owner of the family lot in 1917. One of Donald Stewart's sisters named Christena Stewart, was still living with them on the 1911 Census Report. On some recent information I received from Ida, it seems that Christena Stewart was living in Port Burwell Ontario when she passed on, though I don't know the death date. It is my belief that my Alexander Stewart passed on while he, his son Donald, and daughter Christena went on a trip to the Port Burwell area or Elgin County area in 1917. Donald came back to this area where we live north of Durham near the Rocky Community, and purchased a farm in 1818, but Christena and her father Alexander Stewart did not come back with Donald. Alexander Stewart is not listed on his family's gravestone at the Latona Pioneer Cemetary just north of here, though his wife Ann Cameron's name is inscribed there on the gravestone. Therefore I am looking for Alexander Stewart's gravestone inscription as well as his daughter Christena Stewart gravestone in the Elgin County area, which includes Port Burwell. DOES anyone have access to lists that might have my two relatives burial places on them. I have tried searching and have found some cemetary lists in Elgin County, but I haven't found my two Stewarts yet. I would appreciate greatly your kind assistance. I'm just working through the Kennedy families on Mull. Maybe I'll have more information later. I did a check for a marriage but I couldn't find one between Catherine McKinnon & Kenneth Kennedy sorry. Ida Ellen Sturgeon wrote: >Hi everybody, >Still looking for info of my g-grandfather's parents, Catherine McKinnon, & Daniel Alexander McNair. Catherine was the daughter of Charles McKinnon, & Rachel Beaton of Lee. Born September 22nd 1822. We now wonder if g-grandfather James McNair was born out of wedlock. He was brought up by his McKinnon grandparents. There is no record of a marriage between Catherine & Daniel Alexander. My cousin was told that Catherine married a Kenneth Kennedy who was also from Mull. She at least had two sons. They moved to Old Kilpatrick which is on the lower part of the river Clyde. Kenneth Kennedy worked as a bridge keeper on the Forth & Clyde Canal. This is all we know about Kenneth Kennedy. Has anyone information re this Kennedy family on Mull? >All the best, >Ellen. > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SCT-ISLEOFMULL-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Jay, This is wonderful. I'll print out and see if I can match. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] MacLean - Garvie Connection
    2. Thomas W Bennion
    3. Looking for some help. Have been communicating (via email) with Colin Garvie in South Africa, who is attempting to trace a Garvie-MacLean connection. He referenced a book, "Memories and Meanings of My Life", by Alfred E. Garvie which mentions a connection. I was not aware of this, so I purchased a copy of the book and will quote here to see if anyone on the list can help. "When William of Orange visited Scotland in 1689 the Lowlands were ready to receive him as King; but the Highland clans rose in rebellion, among others the Maclean clan, on the summons of Viscount Dundee. After the defeat at Killiecrankie, the clansmen scattered. Some of the Macleans settled in Perthshire, and assumed the name Garvie, which is found in a parish register in 1690; and is said to be derived from a Gaelic word garbh, meaning strong or rough. The Garvies in Perthshire claimed descent from Lachlan Maclean of Coll, and the Garvies in Rosshire had a McLeod for ancestor. Three Garvies (John, James, and Patrick) settled at Balgarvie, which had already long borne that name.... The previous existence of the name may explain the modification of the original Gaelic garbh. Whatever be the trustworthiness of these traditions, it is an attested fact that my great-grandfather was employed on the land at Kinfauns at the end of the eighteenth century, and the name is found in burial records there, the usual Christian names being James and Thomas. My grandfather Thomas and hihs brother James were, about 1820, settled as weavers of Paisley shawls in Penicuik, and in the Pentland Hills, and there he found his bride, Jane Sinclair." Colin also provided the following in one of his messages: According to a letter from J C Garvie Macleod to the editor of the Oban Times, Spenthorn, West Park, Leeds (date unknown) it is said that the Garvies of Perthshire "are descended from John Garbh, seventh Maclean of Coll, through one of his sons, probably John of Totaronald." According to him, John Garbh was wounded at the Battle of Inverkeithing, Fifeshire (1651) and did not return to Coll. His three sons (or grandsons) rented Upper Balgarvie, Lower Balgarvie and the Mill of Balgarvie in the Perthshire, Parish of Scone from the Earl of Mansfield. Their descendants were tenants of Muirton, Haggis Hall and other farms near Perth. Now, John Garbh's (or Garve) Maclean, 7th of Coll, was a son of Lachlan MacLean, 6th of Coll and Florence MacLeod - could this be the MacLean/MacLeod referred to by Alfred E. Garvie? There seems to be very little information floating around about the MacLean's of Totaronald. We do know that John, of Totaronald was wounded at the Battle of Inverkeithing : From List of Known Casualties, Battle of Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland, 20th July 1651: Wounded - John MacLean of Totronald, 2nd son of John Garbh MacLean of Coll. The following is information I have collected since Colin and I began discussions: >From the Seneachie, p. 327: The Fourth Cadet of the Family of Coll is descended from John of Totteronald, 2nd son of John Garve, the 7th Maclean of Coll. He was with his chief, Sir Lauchlan, during the civil wars. He and his brother Hugh were among the first that joined the standard of Montrose at Strathearn in the beginning of the year 1646. Both were again with their father's men at Inverkeithing, where the gallant Hugh was killed and John severely wounded, and made prisoner. After the restoration he went to London, and was introduced to the king, who was pleased to acknowledge that he had recollection of his sufferings. Yet, as was not an uncommon custom with Charles in dealing with his best friends, the royal acknowledgment of the importance of his services was the only reward Totteronald ever got. He was married to Marion, daughter of Maclean of Ardgour, by whom he had Allan of Totteronald, who succeeded him. John Maclean of Totteronal had another son called Hugh, of whom was descended Doctor Hector Maclean, late of Edinburgh. >From Clan Gillean, p. 373: John was the progenitor of the Macleans of Totaranald. >From History of the Clan MacLean, by J. P. MacLean, p. 287: John, of Totaranald. >From Burke's Landed Gentry of Scotland, p. 95: John ruadh, ancestor of the Macleans of Totrenald. From: List of Known Casualties, Battle of Inverkeithing, Fife, Scotland, 20th July 1651: Wounded - John MacLean of Totronald, 2nd son of John Garbh MacLean of Coll. The following information was supplied by Edwin Maclean (emaclean@ansonic.comau), but I have not been able to trace the individuals to John, 1st of Totronald: John Ruadh Maclean of Totronald m. Margaret Maclean Children: 1.Allan of Totronald m. Catherine Macleod, dau. of Roderick Macleod of Hammer 2. Hugh in Grimsary Allan of Totronald: (which is 1 above) Children: 1a. Hector - tenant in Totamore in 1776 2b. John 3c. Allan 4d. Roderick 5e. Lachlan Hector - tenant in Totamore in 1776 (which is 1a above) Children: 2a. John 2b. Lachaln in Freeslan, died after 1841 2c. Donald NOTE: I did find a Hector Mclean, as a tenant in Totamore listed on the "List of Inhabitants of the Island of Coll", 2 Dec. 1776, transcribed by Linda Temple & Flora MacDonald and edited by Keith Dash. The problem I have with this being the correct Hector (ie Hector, son of Allan Maclean, 2nd of Totronald), is that the name of Hector's wife in the 1776 census is given as Mary McDonald. The Seneachie says that Hector Maclean, son of Allan Maclean, 2nd of Totronald married Margaret Maclaughlan. The actual listing from the 1776 census reads: Totamore - McLean, Hector Mcdonald, Mary Children: John; Lachlane; Catharine; Donald. The second problem I have with this is, could Hector, son of Allan Maclean, 2nd of Totronald, been alive in 1776? Continuing with Edwin's information: Lachlan in Freeslan (which is 2b above) Children: 3a. Allan, cir 1805 3b. Donald, cir 1806 3c. Hector, cir 1809 NOTE: I did have a marriage record for a "Lachlane" (which is spelled as it was in the 1776 census) McLean, to an Anne McLean, 8 May 1801 Coll Parish, Argyll, Scotland, at the Family History Center, Batch: 7107848, Source Call No. 1235202. For children of this couple, I found the following under Batch: 7127102, Source Call No. 0538942: Allan, christened 12 June 1805, Coll Parish, Argyll, Scotland; Donald, christened 29 February 1807, Coll Parish, Argyll, Scotland, and Hector, christened 26 February 1809, Coll Parish, Argyll, Scotland. Continuing with Edwin's information: 2. Hugh In Grimsary (which would be the second son of John Ruadh Maclean, 1st of Totronald) Children: 2a. John Children: 3a; Hugh, in Knock before 1776, after 1790 (I'm assuming these years are birth and death) Children: 4a. Dr. Hector 1776x1810 (here again, I'm assuming these years are birth and death) Children: 5a: William Swinton 1790 x 1825, married 11/9/1818 Marion Maclean, dau. of Lt. rocerick Neil Maclean (1761-1794) and Christian Cameron - 2 daus. 4b. Dr. Lachlan - Surgeon - 1776 x 1799. (I"m reading this as Dr. Lachlan being a second son of Hugh (3a above). NOTE: As to the William Swinton MacLean listed as 5a above. I have the following: From Blackwood's Edinburg Magazine, Vol. IV, Oct. 1818 - March, 1819, p. 117 - Marriages: 11 Sept. 1818 - In St. Paul's Chapel, York-place, Edinburgh, W. Swinton Maclean, eldest son of Dr. Maclean, to Marion, only daughter of the late Roderick Neill Maclean, Esq., and niece of Alexander Maclean, Esq. of Coll. This Marion MacLean was a daughter of Roderick Neil Maclean (son of Hugh, 13th or 14th, of Coll - died 4 May 1786, and Janet MacLeod, of Talisker) and Christian Cameron, of Glendessary. Marion was christened 30 October 1790 in Coll Parish, Argyll, Scotland. I have listing for three children born to this couple in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine - A. Infant, born & died 17 Nov. 1819 in New Laverock Bank, Scotland B. Daughter, born 23 May 1821 in New Laverock Bank, Scotland C. Son, born 30 Sept. 1825 in New Laverock Bank, Scotland Unfortunately, Blackwood's does not provide names of the children. Looking for any help that anyway on the list can give us! Thanks, Linda Bennion
