Hi Angela, Welcome to the list. I agree with Elaine re Victorian Ordnance Survey maps. They are the best 'old' maps today available in print. These are available from Amazon.co.uk and other sources. Victorian Maps of Mull are also available online at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ For current maps, the Ordnance Survey publish two series but I would recommend the Explorer Series. Mull is covered by numbers 373, 374 and 375. I known the list to which Elaine refers because I used to display the list on the mullgenealogy website together with a map showing the location of the places listed. It originally appeared on the Mull list in around 2001/2 I think. However that list contains only a small fraction of the locations on Mull with all there various spellings. That is why I replaced the list and map with the current location finder on the website. The location database contains over 7,600 entries. Not that there are 7,600 locations as some places can be spelt in at least half a dozen different ways. I am still adding to this database as I come across new locations and different spellings. If it's any consolation I have transcribed all of the Mull OPR's and I could not make out all of the placenames. I'm currently adding the transcriptions to the records displayed under the 'Surname Index' tab on the website so there is a chance that your family are already there with what I think is the placename. Please check there first and if your family is not listed, send me their names and I will check my transcriptions from which I will hopefully be able to give you the location. I agree that most of the writing is terrible. Hope this helps, Ian webmaster www.mullgenealogy.co.uk
I wish to clarify the info on my previous E Mail about the new Data Bases at FHCs. If you go to www.familysearch.org , click on NEWS and then on 'More Web Site Services' 25 May 2007 This will explain which web sites will be free at FHCs,you have to pay to access these sites on your own computer. The second link I gave was ..'Free Website Access to U.S. and British Records & Information' This is a list provided by Family Search of what's free on the Internet. This is not connected to the new data bases. Sorry about the confusion, Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada.

Hi Ian Thanks for reminding me to look at your Mull site. I am basically a "paper person" and forget to use all the things that are out there. You do an amazing job. Hi Have you looked at Ian's old map at http://web.ukonline.co.uk/ian.phillips/mull/location_map.htm There's also a gazetteer at http://web.ncf.ca/cv297/mullgaz.html and Ian's location index http://web.ukonline.co.uk/ian.phillips/mull/ Tirgoil is correct, as is Suie. Shieha = Shiaba. Ardm..ach = Ardmeanach. Sars..chain = perhaps Saorphein? Tirengain = Tirergain aka Tir Fhearagain Fingfort = Fionnphort? Remember, though, that in old docs spelling is often inconsistent. I hope some of this helps, Janet > Hi There > I'm a 'newer' member with an interest in the McFadyen families. Hi, I'm a brand new member to your site and hope to be able to learn and contribute a bit here! My first post is in regard to the McLachlans' of Mull. I have an 1841 Mull census that lists Mary McLachlan 40, Janet McLachlan, 15, Donald McLachlan 15 and John McLachlan 14 as living at house #65 at Portmore Tobermory. This are the same names and approximate ages as ancestors that arrived in Prince Edward Island in 1843. Right down to the absence of a father/husband. Would anyone have any information on this family or any guidance on where on could look in order to find more? Secondly I have an Archibald McLachlan born and baptised in Baliscate K&K Parish, Mull in 1792/93 to Catherine McPhail and John McLachlan. John is listed as a workman in Aros in 1779 all Church of Scotland. If anyone has information on this fellow and his family, or potential research leads it would be greatly appreciated. As soon as I gather my information in regard to my McPhail, McPherson, Murray ancestors on Mull I'll post that as well. Thanks for your time. Chris and I feel there is a connection as our families were living at Glenbyre at the same time. It's just finding a confirming link that's proving elusive. Best wishes Moira

I received a phone call from Salt Lake today at my shift at our local FHC...we have been connected to web sites that usually require payment, they are now free at our FHC. As a result of the new set up, FHCs now have access to census and vital records etc...these records are only accessible at you local FHC...check with your local FHC to see if they are linked to it yet. If not ,It's only a phone call away ! This is the URL for info only, you cannot access any records except at you FHC. http://www.fhc.familysearch.org/ These are the collections that will be available ...hope the link comes thru OK. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/home/news/press/Free_Online_Records.pdf Good Luck Frank McGonigal Ont.Canada.

Hi While on the subject of McPhails and McKinnons, I am trying to find the name of the McKinnon husband of Barbara McKinnon who, in 1841 is in Lephein with Lachlan McKinnon 11 and Margaret McKinnon 8 and in 1851 is a visitor with Alexander and Ann McPhail in Lephein. ..no sign of the children. In 1861 she is alone in Lephein and the census says she is in a private house. At this time the McPhails are in another house in Lephein and this census has Alex McPhail and Barbara McKinnon both born on Morvern. I am supposing she was a McPhail. I can't find her in 1871. I am not related to this McKinnon but it is just part of my on going search for Mull McKinnons. Thanks Elaine Robinson Georgetown Ontario Looking for McKinnons in Ontario and Mull
Hi Ian is probably the expert on this (maps), but I use several things. One is the set of reprints of Victorian Ordnance Survey maps: you need sheets 43, 44, 51, and 52 to cover all of Mull. The second is just a regular tourist map. The third thing which I really couldn't do without is a list of placenames which was on this list a few years ago. It took several emails to cover it all and I think it was sent by Jean Whimp or Jill Dakin. It will be in the Mull list archives , but I'm afraid I don't remember the date..and I only have a hard copy. Maybe someone else saved it on their computer. I really use it constantly....so a big thank you to who ever submitted it.
