    1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] McKinnon Livingston
    2. Elaine Robinson
    3. Hi Just in case there is someone new on the list, here are my McKinnons as I know them. Farquhar McKinnon, weaver of Knockvoligan married Marion (Sarah) Livingston of Fidden on Jan 27 1818. Mary Livingston of Fidden who could be Sarah's sister married Donald McEachern on Feb 24 1818. Donald was of Knockvoligan. Farquhar and Sarah and daughter Mary left for Ontario about 1821. Apparently Farquhar's mother went with them as his father had been killed in Portugal. I don't know the name of either. The 1779 census had the following family in Kenlock. Allan McKinnon 28 workman Hugh (Eun) McKinnon 10 his brother Neil 12 his brother wife, mother, sister Neil and his wife Marsaly McGillvra and family went to the Red River Settlement in 1812. In 1815 they left Red River and came to Upper Canada (Ontario) Hugh and wife Margaret McGillivra joined Neil in about 1821. I think Farquhar probably came with his Uncle Hugh. Marsaly and Margaret were sisters and the daughters of Donald McGillivra and were born at the foot of Glenmore. I do not definitely know that my Farquhar is the nephew of Neil and Hugh, but there is a lot of secondary evidence that he is. I have quite a lot on these families in Ontario, but they left Mull so early that I have never found any connections there for my McKinnons or Livingstons. 3. John Thank you so much for this. I wish I could claim these McKinnons as mine ,but mine left Mull so early it has been impossible (so far) to find their connections in Mull. While collecting my McKinnons in Ontario I decided to collect all McKinnons and try and find where they came from. Recently I was working on some McKinnon deaths, one of them being Donald McKinnon. Anyway, through luck and a bit of work I traced him to Paisley and was delighted to find he was actually from Mull. Another large family of McKinnons from Shiaba, Donald and Mary McCormack, came to Bruce County from Shiaba. I would think there may be a connection there somewhere, but that's another quest. After I posted, I did find Lachlan on the 1861 census on Wardrop St in Paisley with wife Janet and children Colin and Jane. If you are interested in what I have on Donald let me know. 2. Elaine, I think that I can help a little with at least one of the branches. Flora Campbell was born in 1805 in Carsaig and died in Infirmary in Paisley in 1874. Flora's parents were Alexander Campbell and Janet Lamont . I reckon that John McKinnon was born around 1800. I notice that in the famous Siaba clearance documents there is a John MacKinnon signatory ...was it same one ?? There seems to have been only one John McKinnon there at the time of appropriate age. John and Flora had the children you mention in your email . I am descended from the son Lauchlan MacKinnon , b 1837. As you know the whole family were in Paisley in 1851. Lauchlan married Janet Barr in 1859 and they were in Wardrop Streep Paisley in 1861, in 1871 they were in Neilston Road Paisley , and in 1881 Wallneuk Street , Paisley. Their children were Colin , Flora, Mary b ~1866 ,John , Lauchlan , and Isabella . Lauchlan senior seems to have fallen on hard times living in Paisley Model Lodging house in 1891 , dieing 1917 in Craw Road Paisley. Mary MacKinnon ( b ~1866) married John Adam in Paisley and they had children including Janet Adam b 1895. This Janet Adam was my Grandmother . Several of my grandmother's Adam siblings emigrated to Canada . She herself actually emigrated to Canada ( Montreal) in her late teens and stayed there a couple of years . On her way back to Scotland she met a sailor called James Johnston who was from Islay ( another Argyll island) . Their children included my mother Janet Adam Johnston who married my father William McDougall. Elaine , if you are also descended from the "original" John MacKinnon and Flora Campbell seems like we could be distant relatives. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] More McKinnon’s!!!
    2. David
    3. Hi All Further to my last Post regarding Neil McKinnon and his family from Torosay Parish and a lead from Ida regarding a possible brother Alexander McKinnon in Ardtun, Kilfinichen Parish. I have been busy checking facts and have uncovered a raft of “new” McKinnon’s Alexander indeed in the son of John McKinnon and Helen McPhail. I think John McKinnon is still Alive in the 1841 Census aged 75, giving a birth date of Abt 1766, he is listed as an agricultural labourer in the 1841 Census and Neil’s Death Certificate in 1871, however in his other son Alexander’s Death Certificate in 1862 he is listed as a Sheriff Officer. Alexander was born around 1798 in Kilmore and married Margaret McKinnon, daughter of John McKinnon and Marion Campbell. They have the following children: Malcolm b 9/12/1829 John b 19/5/1833 Alexander B 4/11/1834 Robert b Abt 1843 All these children are born in Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon. Malcolm marries Mary McPhail of North Uist in 1859 in Bunessan, they have the following children Flora Ann McKinnon b17/1/1862 Alexander b 16/1/1864 Ann b 10/11/1865 Malcolm was a Seaman , when he married and in the 1861 Census he is listed as being at Sea and is Master of the Mary of Tyree a Coastal Sloop, he looks to have died sometime before the 1871 Census Mary McPhail dies in 1900 in Ardtun, but she has an illegitimate son Archibald Campbell in 1870, born in Bunessan, his father is Isaac Campbell, Archibald dies in 1896 in Bunessan. John looks like he dies before the 1841 Census Alexander dies in 1921 in Ardfenaig, Mull and the informant is A.McKinnon Robert marries Mary Rose in Bunessan in 1876, the have the following Children. He dies 1924 in Ardfenaig, Mull Margaret b 1878 Archibald b 1880 Ann b 1882 Alexander b1884 dies 1945 in Ardfenaig, never married Catherine b 1888 Margaret marries William McCallum in 1906 and her son Robert is the informant on his Uncle Alexander’s death certificate. Hopefully somebody might recognize some of these names and be able to link in and fill in some of the gap, if any one wants the certificates mail me Regards David No virus found in this outgoing message. 3. Hi Ida, Good to hear from you. You are spot on with your dates for the children of Alexander Mckechnie and Margaret McPhail. I have all that information now and quite a bit of background in a paper from Moira. If you find anything more about Neilina we would be most interested. Our mystery is that she is listed as a cousin of Alexander Fletcher in the 1891 census at Lochdonhead. All the best, Bob

    3. Hi Jacqueline, Pleased to hear that you are back home safely after all your expedition round Scotland and Ireland. Like you I'm having withdrawal symptoms. I'm booked again for next September but have a feeling that I'm not going to be able to last out that long before another visit. Just looking for an excuse. Good to hear that you also had some luck with your researches. Look forward to receiving details. Did you go to the rugby match? I'm sure you would have enjoyed it if you could have got a ticket. >> If I can drive on the left side of the road, through the mountains, and on one track roads, I am sure anyone who is a little nervous of doing so will do fine once you get out there. Please note all those of you thinking of making a trip. I can tell you that its nothing like driving a right hand car in a left hand country. On a personal note I'm pleased to have been able to have been able to take you round the island and across to Iona. You were great company and I enjoyed he day. Thanks for not commenting on my driving as I would like to take many more list members round the island yet. Have had brakes replaced you will be pleased to know :-). Perhaps you can also convince those who might be thinking of visiting that it really does take a day to get round the island. Hope to hear that you have booked a return visit soon. Next time you can drive me round the island and you can show me how two cars can pass at speed in passing places. Yes it can be done and you have seen it done. Here's to the next time. Ian Ps Thanks for your card. Much appreciated. PPs I take booking for trips between September 7 and September 18 2008. First come, first served. 3. Hi Bob, Moria and others.. Just for the sake of getting out the information I have here. Alexander McKechnie (sp) and Margaret McPhail b May 9 1825 in Rothill TRS m's Aug 19 1856 at Laggan have the following children: John Feb 1 1859 Mary Sarah Sep 6 1860 Margaret Aug 5 1862 Catherine May 27 1865 Neilna May 28 1868 Therefore when Mary had Neilna she would have been 43 So If they married in 1856 theirs probably another child before John which I haven't came accross yet :-) catch ya later Ida Bob Murray wrote: >I have come late on this discussion as I have been away. Brown-Whittaker do not publish many books. Last book to my knowledge was a book on birds back in 2006. 1. [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Mcleans of Creich
    2. Sandford MacLean
    3. Dear Friends, Some of you I know are related to my g-g-g grandfather DONALD MCLEAN, who was born in Creich in 1786, and who married JANET MCCALLUM in 1809, and subsequently moved to Quebec. While vivisting Mull last month we stopped by the Ross of Mull Historical Centre and made a little discovery. In the Duke of Argyll's Census of 1779, there are listed four Mcleans in Creich: SANDY MCLEAN (age 68) his son JOHN MCLEAN (age 25) his son HUGH (age 20) While discussing this information with Fiona Shannon in the Centre, she suggested that it is most likely that either Hugh or John was my Donald's father, and Sandy was his grandfather, as there would not have been an influx of many more Mcleans by the time Donald was born. Does anyone know anything about these three "new" Mcleans? Best regards, Sandford MacLean

But as usual proof is missing! To my mind we must try to widen our search on the McKechnies/ MacEacherns. Remember that the Fragments tell us that the MacEacherns and Fletchers were already related. So the link might be that far back. I have the birth of Margaret MacPhail, daughter of Angus MacPhail and Mary MacPhail as 1832. Is that correct? The 1871 census entry for Baligown shows Margaret MacPhail wife of Alexander McKechnie as aged 60, i.e. born 1811. This is a fairly big date discrepancy. But also note that the last three children of that family were born when Margaret was over 50 if 1811 is correct. It shows Neilina born when her mother was 58. That is a bit improbable and puts doubts in my mind. Bob Murray
