    3. Hi James, The nearest burial ground to Achnacroish would be Kilpatrick (Duart) on the road to Duart Castle. Unfortunately I have no knowledge of MI transcriptions from Kilpatick (Duart). Ian

    3. Hi listers Re burial customs I have had trouble finding my gg grandmothers grave. She was Catherine Campbell nee Fletcher born about 1810.She Married Hector Campbell in 1832 they resided in Ardtun. She died around 1847.Hector left for Canada in 1850 on the Conrad without her so it is presumed she died before that time .There is a OPRA as follows 27 March Catherine Campbell died which may be her. She may not have a headstone because money was scarce at that time. Perhaps she was buried with her Fletcher kin.I do not know who her parents were. Alexander Fletcher has kindly been on the lookout for her.If any of you visit Mull and the cemeterys please let me know of a Catherine Fletcher. regards Gerry PS Due to Jim McCormicks help I have found a several Campbell/Fletcher cousins in Montana USA regards Gerry i have not yet found

    3. the topic is of great interest to me - my great great great grandmother Mary (Gregor) MacPharlain who lived in Achnacroish, Parish of Kilninian and Kilmore, Torosay District, was a widow for many years. Her husband Peter(Parag) MacPharlain according to traditions in our family died by drowning the night of the birth of their son Parlan in 1782. His body was recovered and the story as passed down says she walked with the baby in her arms to the cemetery behind the coffin. Her journey of several miles was remembered for generations after her two sons Peter and Parlan MacPharlain(MacFarlane in later years) left for Cape Breton in 1820 with a large group of Mull emigrants and established homes here in Mull River. It was believed in the family that it was very unusual for a woman to go to the graveyard (and that understanding was confirmed in recent conversations with people from the Hebrides). But she was determined to go and so did. But where was she buried ? Where was the cemetery near Achnacroish? We have also believed she died before her sons left Scotland - but I have recently started to wonder if perhaps she did come with them and died here. 3. It can also happen that the widow goes to live with the one of her children (which could be some distance from where her husband was buried) and is buried there. Equally, it could be that the widow is buried in the same plot but this is not recorded on the headstone as finances at the time would not allow the additional inscription. Like Jill, I know of examples where a wife/widow is buried with her parents. 3. I can confirm everything Ida says about Bob's # 1 Donald Fletcher Mar 15 1804 - Aug 6 1884 m's Marion McPhail. I agree the error in the 1841 census, clearly just a copying mistake. I also agree the error on Donald b 13 Jun 1859 death date is 1946 not 1846. I have exact birth and death dates for that whole family, so the web page could be made much more precise if you want to do it. I have never been able to sort out # 2 Donald Fletcher abt 1780 Married to Marion McPhail. I'll give it another try when I get time and see if I can come up with anything. Later, Bob

    3. Sorry - while I don't have it to hand right now I will have to express an interest in Donald Fletcher knocking around Mull in this period. I just checked to make sure I'm not the source of the inaccuracy on the website (don't think I am) and I will check back to see if I can help with this one... Sorry I know nothing about them, but do know a bit about the Fletchers. Have a good time in Mull. One bit of advice, ask the locals questions, they know quite a lot! I was interested in your suggestion that Donald Fletcher's parents should be Neil & Chirsty and not John and Catherine. I presume you got that from the Mull website. Unfortunately there is an inaccuracy there in that there are two Donald Fletchers 1800/4-1884 listed and both married to MacPhails. The one with wife Marion [Sarah] MCPHAIL is correct. I can prove it as I have Donald's death certificate which lists John FLETCHER and Catherine MCFARLANE as his parents. The one with wife Sarah MCPHAIL must be wrong. Both entries list the same children but they are definitely the children of Marion [Sarah]. The youngest one, Donald born 1859 is my great grandfather. I hope this is helpful. 3. Hi Ida Plenty more digging, thinking of heading to Mull in late November so will have to get a list of things to do ready!!! Just thought I would respond to couple of queries/questions I think Malcolm, husband of Mary McPhail (or Mary Uist as I have been calling her) is dead befor e1871 but there is no DC and cant see a match on SP at present. Flora Ann McKinnon , haven’t got the family on 1881 Census yet so don’t know if she survived till then (aged 19 or so ) or died younger. Don’t know much about Alexander, there is no wife mentioned on his DC, and his nephew being the informant suggests no children. Don’t know where he is buried or where brother Robert is buried either. I still have a few brothers and sisters to track down and confirm marriages/deaths/census' for David No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. Hi Jo and Bob, Should have checked the Knock MI a little more accurately. Fancy getting Campbells and Fletchers mixed up. So sorry Jo, back to the drawing board. Have double checked all the Campbell and McColl entries in the burial ground listings and cannot spot anything of a close match. Thanks Bob for indicating which of the two sets of records of Donald Fletcher/Marion [Sarah] McPhail is the correct set. Have now deleted the wrong set so hopefully any further confusion will be negated. For those who have been following the story, I have now hopefully entered all the OPR records into my copy of the database and have made a start on removing some duplicates. Will update the online database soon. Hope you enjoy your stay at Druimnacroish Jo. Hope you have told the owners about the family connection. The old village of Druimnacroish is about half a mile north west of the hotel. Ian Bob Murray wrote: > Hi Jo, > > It was good to see Ian giving you a bit of help with your McColls. 3. Thanks Ian The Duncan McColl in your reply could possibly be the one,but without further proof it's hard to say for sure. If my Duncan died on Mull it follows that his wife would be mentioned on the tombstone, but then who knows, maybe it wasn't common practise. Anyway thanks for checking,I'll enter the info as a possible in my FTM. Frances and I are just heading out for a drive up North in the countryside to see the Fall colours with our son John and his wife,..beautiful day outside,..the weathers been brilliant here most of the summer, but not enough rain for the farmers unfortunately. 3. Hi Jo, Think I have found your Neil McColl and Catherine Campbell in Knock burial ground. There is a headstone in there for a Neill McColl and his spouse Katherin Fletcher and their son Hugh. According to the records I have Hugh had a sister Isabel which I think ties in with your family. The headstone details are from 'Altera Merces' from Brown and Whittaker Publications, Tobermory. The book also contains a plan of the burial ground which should help you locate the headstone. Other McColl's are listed in Pennygowan and Cill an Alein burial grounds. 'Gus Am Bris An La' lists McColls in Kilninian Burial Ground, Treshnish and at Calgary. Hope this helps and enjoy your stay on Mull. All the best, Ian

    2. Joanne Savile
    3. It's been a while since my last post but I still follow the messages. I'm about to visit Mull next week to try and locate places and burial plots. Pennygowan seems to be the key place for Fletcher burials, I'm not sure where the McColls may be, perhaps one is on Iona. Can anyone help or suggest places to look other than the museum archives? Catherine Fletcher's ((1802-1907) married to James Ronaldson) parents were Lachlan Fletcher (c 1798-c1853) & Isabel McColl (c1789-19/3/1866). Lachlan was from Auchadashenaig at he time of his marriage (8/2/1809) and Isabel was from Corkamull. Isabel was the daughter of Neil McColl and Catharine Campbell (from her death certificate). Another of Lachlan & Isabel's daughters, Isabel Fletcher (b 1812 Baliochdrach) possibly appears in the 1841 census in Salen with her ageing maternal grandparents: "Bell Fletcher" aged 28 is in the same household as Nuel (Niel /Neil) McColl (90) & Catherine McColl (85). Also in the same house is Dugall McColl (50). A death certificate for Dugald McColl (4/7/1863 in Iona) says he is married to Flora McInnes, was 75yrs old when he died and gives parents as Niel McColl (farmer) & Catharine Campbell.Dugald's son-in-law was Duncan MacPhail. Baptism records show Hugh McColl (1/8/1793) and Donald McColl (10/9/1796) to also be sons of Neil McColl & Catharine Campbell in Corkamull. Lachlan may be a son of Neil Fletcher & Chirsty MacDougall; in the 1841 census at Penalbanach 3 Fletcher families are next door to each other Donald Fletcher (b abt 1780) & Catharine Patience, Lachlan Fletcher & Isabel(la), and Neil Fletcher (1800-1/3/1879) & Jane Corbet. Neil was the son of Neil & Chirsty, I don't know the parentage of this Donald (1780) or Lachlan but I came across what I think may be an error listed on the site. The death cert for Donald Fletcher (1800-6/8/1884 postmaster & widower of Sarah McPhail), gives his parents as John Fletcher shoemaker & Catherine McFarlane not Neil & Chirsty. Best Wishes, Jo Savile

    3. Hi Ian While we're on the subject of McCOLLS,my gr.gr.gr.grandfather MAY have died on Mull. He was born c 1775,possibly not on Mull, but his last child Mary was born at Scallastle 1811. His wife Catherine McKay and son John and family, moved to Morvern in the early 1830s from Scallastle and eventually made their way to East Kilbride in Lanarkshire. Catherine is listed as a widow on the census there in 1841. Not a lot of information, but just wondering if you have a Duncan McCOLL death or burial listed anywhere between 1811 and abt.1830. While collecting my McKinnons in Ontario I decided to collect all McKinnons and try and find where they came from. Recently I was working on some McKinnon deaths, one of them being Donald McKinnon. Anyway, through luck and a bit of work I traced him to Paisley and was delighted to find he was actually from Mull. Another large family of McKinnons from Shiaba, Donald and Mary McCormack, came to Bruce County from Shiaba. I would think there may be a connection there somewhere, but that's another quest. After I posted, I did find Lachlan on the 1861 census on Wardrop St in Paisley with wife Janet and children Colin and Jane. If you are interested in what I have on Donald let me know.
