    2. Duncan & Pam McMillan
    3. Many thanks for all your help. May some (Can't be too greedy!!) of your most difficult family history road blocks be broken through in 2008. I am hoping that 2008 will lead to some breakthroughs for me, as well, before I make a long overdue visit to Mull, Glasgow and Fort William, and possibly Edinburgh, in 2008 or 2009. Best Wishes Duncan Duncan & Pam McMillan

    3. Mary, I have a suggestion on how to get your father to do the DNA test. Two years ago, my daughter bought and paid for the DNA test as a Christmas present for me through the Clan Cameron project . I had one match but unfortunately neither of us have been able to trace our ancestor back to Scotland. I do have my maternal side back to Mull. Your father will probably follow through if it's already paid for. Good Luck, John Cameron

    3. Hi list, A friend whose son is working on breaking ground DNA in the USA (kids and Leukemia) said her son had warned his father about getting involved because there was no certainty about ownership of the "intellectual property" that is being shared with DNA matching. Jean Whimp -----Original Message----- From: sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sct-isleofmull-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ron & Mary Harris Sent: Sunday, 23 December 2007 6:57 AM To: sct-isleofmull@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Fletchers Hi Gerry, My father, Angus FLETCHER, is connected to the Mull FLETCHERs. I have been after him for some time to jump on the DNA band wagon, especially since there aren't that many male FLETCHERs around. I think the only thing stopping him is his uncertainty about what it might prove or how useful it is to the family research. I myself think it would be valuable for comparative purposes alone. Maybe if a DNA kit was put right in front of him, he'd just go ahead & do it! I correspond with a FLETCHER in the USA who is absolutely convinced he's as an Argyll FLETCHER, but has no proof of it. He has submitted his DNA to a FLETCHER project (same one? not sure) & found he wasn't related to any of the pre existing members, who were all of English extraction. He did get a match with a fellow eventually - a minister in Texas, who also has no place of origin! They have traced their earliest known ancestors to New England in early 1700s, but so far no foreign born relatives come up. If I could get Dad to submit his DNA, it would help this fellow out & likely quite a few more people too! Any ideas as to how to go about prodding a 76 year old Highlander into submitting DNA? Mary Fletcher Harris Canada (Hoping to visit Mull September 2008.)

    3. Hi Your father-in-law would be ideal .Alex or his cousin Bob mentioned him.to me. Bob and I are maternal Mull Fetchers which is frustrating. However if you can talk our father-in -Law to give it a try I will arrange to send him a kit. The kit sends 3 brushes that you scrub your inner cheek with .One of my 1st cousins who is 79 did a test for the Wilson project -as a result we found a matched cousin. It is best to use the oldest male but sons are ok.My husband refused to take a test but my dear son was willing. We found all kinds of interesting things. I am also taking a trip to Mull in 2009 because there is going to be the Gathering of the Clans in July in Edinburgh. Some of my Canadian are also are coming. Let me know if you want to go ahead.I am at Ballina until Jan 15th .- then to Tasmania until the end of the month to avoid the turists and the heat. many regards Gerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron & Mary Harris" <r_harris@sympatico.ca> To: <sct-isleofmull@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 23, 2007 7:27 AM Subject: Re: [SCT-ISLEOFMULL] Fletchers > Hi Gerry, > > My father, Angus FLETCHER, is connected to the Mull FLETCHERs. 3. Hi All, Quick message to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a good New Year. Hope it brings all that you wish. Regret to say that I have not updated the web site quite as frequently as I would have liked but will have one before the year is out. Pruned around 1,000 duplicates from the database but still many more to go. No sooner have I deleted some records than a new set come along to add thanks to your good selves. Keep them coming. Even it helps to complete the picture. I'm hoping that Father Christmas will bring some new ignition electrodes for my central heating boiler. I've been without central heating now for three days. Should be fixed tomorrow but I'm not holding out to much hope. Spare parts are delivered to the engineer by our Royal Mail. Strike me that this is not the best way at this time of year. My confidence to not raise by the front page of my Sunday paper which reports that the Royal Mail has lost 2 million parcels and letters. As usual at this time of year I would like to thank all those who have contributed to the website and those who send me emails during the year. I would also like to that List Mon Ida who has keep us all on the straight and narrow though the year. Have to say that 2007 has not been quite as busy as previous years so once Christmas and New Year is out of the way, swap your Christmas tree for your family tree. All the very best, Ian

    3. Hi Alex Fletcher of Ardtun ,Mull is now on the Fletcher project ,. FamilyTree.DNA in hopes more Mull related Fletchers join the project. The cost is very affordable and one gets a discount if they join a project. If anyone of you are interested but cannot afford it ($100) I would be happy to pay for the kit to get the ball rolling. The Livingstones have a project going on FamilyTree.DNA why not the rest of us. regards Gerry

    3. Hi Could be of interest to those researching MacLea/McLea/Macleay/etc or Livingston or Livingstone. A forward from the Argyll list. Ian Hi all, For those of you who are researching MacLea/McLea/Macleay/etc or Livingston or Livingstone in Argyll, I would advise stopping by the Clan Forum for Livingstone/MacLea: http://www.clanmclea.co.uk/forum/clanforum.asp or read more about the clan through the links at the left of that page. The McLeas or Livingstones (mostly from Lismore) did fight with the Stewarts of Appin and others in the '45, as part of the Appin Regiment. But there are a lot of other MacLeas around, from various parts of Scotland. We'd love to learn more about any of your families and help put the pieces together of the clan history. There's a growing clan group out there, so come by and introduce yourself. You may find some useful information. We've also built up a database of all the Livingston(e)s or M(a)cLeas/similar in the Scotlandspeople database (just names and dates, not the actual images, too expensive), so feel free to come by for look-ups too! We also have a VERY active DNA project, which welcomes members from any of the possible surnames. http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/MacLea%20surnames.htm http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Discussion%20Maclea.htm Hope this is useful. Haven't found anything for Ann McLeod or Flora McGilvra possibly also illigitimate as Catherine seems to have been single before she married Hugh. She is still in Kintra on the 1901 census. 3. Hi RjP, June, Ian Welcome to the list. One of my projects is piecing together families with the IGI and the census. So every tidbit is most appreciated. Further to June's item below I wonder if the Flora McGilvra might be the Flora McKinnon regst Jun 24 1862 with only Catherine McKinnon as mother. Then this also leads to a Donald McKinnon Dec 6 1864 again with only the mother Catherine McKinnon listed :-[ Ian can you check the OPR's for more information ? thanks. 1871 Iona Kintra 21 McKinnon Catherine 29 Head Cottar Argyllshire Iona 2 UnMar 1861 Beallach Iona Kintra 21 McGilvra Flora 8 Dau Scholar Argyllshire Iona 2 McKinnon Jun 24 1862 not in census but child of Catherine's ? 3. Hi, Welcome to the list as I don't believe that you have posted before. From the information you have supplied I think I have been able to trace your Catherine McKinnon back to the 1851 census. 1851 Iona District : Page No : 102 House No : 1 Locality : Kentra MacKinnon Lachlan 84 Farmer Kilfinichen <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18611073> MacKinnon Ann 46 w Iona MacKinnon Donald 16 s agr labr Iona MacKinnon Hugh 12 s Iona <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18611073> MacKinnon Cathrine 10 d Iona MacKinnon Rebecca 7 d Iona Previous Household <http://localhost/mull_census_f.asp?dir=p&prop_ref=18511066> Next Household <http://localhost/mull_census_f.asp?dir=n&prop_ref=18511066> 1861 Iona District : 3 Page No : 5 House No : 24 Locality : Beallach <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18511066> McKinnon Ann 60 Head Widow of Argicultral Labourer Argyllshire Kilfinichen <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18511066> <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18711069> McKinnon Catherine 20 Dau Argyllshire Iona Previous Household <http://localhost/mull_census_f.asp?dir=p&prop_ref=18611073> Next Household <http://localhost/mull_census_f.asp?dir=n&prop_ref=18611073> 1871 Iona District : 2 Page No : 5 House No : 21 Locality : Kintra 21 <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18611073> <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18811329> McKinnon Catherine 29 Head Cottar Argyllshire Iona McGilvra Flora 8 Dau Scholar Argyllshire Iona <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18811329> Wilson Joseph 3 Son Argyllshire Iona <http://localhost/mull_census.asp?prop_ref=18811329> Wilson John 1 Son Argyllshire Iona As in most cases one question leads to several others. In the 1871 and 1881 census Joseph Wilson is shown as Catherine's stepson, so where is Mr Wilson and who is the Mr McLeod the father of Ann shown as Catherine's step daughter in 1881. Mystery deepens. Ian
